'Men in the United States are experiencing declining outcomes across educational, economic, relational, and mental health domains. While these trends are widely recognized, their causes remain contested. This paper argues that three underexamined sociocultural forces—anti-masculine attitudes, the widespread absence of fathers, and the disappearance of culturally sanctioned rites of initiation—significantly undermine male identity formation.

Drawing on contemporary research in psychology, sociology, and gender studies, as well as classical psychoanalytic insights from Freud and Jung, the paper outlines how shame, inadequate paternal modeling, and the lack of structured developmental transitions contribute to distress, despair, and maladaptive expressions of masculinity. It further proposes psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at restoring positive models of masculinity, strengthening the father–son dyad, and creating men’s groups.

The paper argues that clinicians have an essential role in reshaping cultural narratives around masculinity and mitigating the psychological and societal fallout of male disconnection and disenfranchisement. Counterarguments such as concerns about reifying gender stereotypes or overlooking structural factors are addressed; however, the paper maintains that ignoring gendered developmental needs has produced measurable harm.'
