Help! I Was Just Trying to Help a Young Woman at the Gym. Then She Set Out to Ruin My Reputation.

Article here. Excerpt:

'One day, after noticing her squat form, I couldn’t help but intervene. I gave her some tips and a brief demonstration and told her that I just wanted her to avoid injury. She didn’t seem put off at the moment, but the next time I was there, one of the owners pulled me aside and told me that a “female patron” had complained that I was sexually harassing her. I was taken aback and asked if it was because of this interaction, and I was told that, for confidentiality reasons, they couldn’t confirm who complained about me. They said that they take these matters very seriously and banned me from the gym for a month! ...

I am angry and genuinely anxious about going back. I am concerned that no matter what I do, there will be a target on my back, and that anything I do might be misconstrued by her as harassment, even if it’s just incidental eye contact. I don’t want to feel like I’m walking on eggshells at the gym, but this is an important community to me, and the thought of just giving it up because of this saddens me and makes me a little resentful.

No need to worry about your very existence being misconstrued as harassment. Just refrain from volunteering your coaching services in the future. If you want to be even safer, because you’re so shaken by this experience, let other people who aren’t already your buddies start conversations with you instead of the other way around. If you and your gym friends sincerely believe that you’re innocent and the owner overreacted because this woman is his niece, you have no reason to feel that everyone there is a potential accuser. But take a lesson from this that will improve the experience of those in and out of the gym who you cross paths with: Never comment on another person’s body, even in a place that’s all about bodies.'

Don't talk to females at the gym unless you absolutely have to. It matters not how they dress or anything else. Don't smile at them or look too long at them. Don't try to make eye contact. As far as you are concerned, they are UN-PERSONS. This is the safest, wisest course of action.
