'France is lagging behind the UK in tackling toxic masculinity and should declare it a threat to national security, a government report has claimed.

Around 10 million French people, some 17 per cent of the population, subscribe to “hostile sexism”, a mindset that devalues women and, in its most extreme forms, can justify violence, France’s equality watchdog said.

In its annual report, the Higher Council for Equality (HCE) warned that a growing “masculinist” ideology is being fuelled by culture wars imported from the United States, legitimised by Donald Trump, and amplified by social media.

While no French politicians were singled out, one of its authors questioned Emmanuel Macron’s record on gender equality, contrasting his rhetoric with figures such as Mr Trump.'
