Woman gets 13 years after shooting man in face at Kent Starbucks

Story here. Excerpt:

'Surveillance footage showed Fermina Bertos, then 24, walking with Madrigal toward the coffee shop in July 2014 before pulling her gun from her purse as he opened the door for her.

Now, a woman who aspired to become an advocate for sexual assault and human trafficking victims is headed to prison for 13 years.

Bertos was sentenced in King County Superior Court's Kent courthouse Friday, where friends and family members of both Bertos and Madrigal packed the courtroom. Several attested to Bertos's standing as a kind friend, responsible employee, good daughter and star student.

But Bertos's promising future is on hold after the uncharacteristic shooting of a man she believed raped her the night before.

Bertos and Madrigal began to see each other less than two weeks before the shooting. One night, they had a sexual encounter that she believed was rape, but Madrigal told police she did nothing to indicate it was not consensual, according to court records.

The next day, Bertos went to work at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in downtown Tacoma. Soon after leaving work that morning, she texted Madrigal indicating she wanted to meet with him. She picked him up at his home in Kent, where they went to pump gas before heading for Starbucks.

Madrigal would later tell Kent police that as he was opening the door, he heard a loud noise, hit his head against the window and fell to the ground, coughing and seeing blood, Detective Steven Kelly wrote in the police reports.'
