'State Sen. Eric Kearney plans to introduce a resolution urging U.S. Congress to require women to register for selective service.
Currently only male citizens age 18 through 25 must register to be drafted into military service in case of a crisis per the federal Military Selective Service Act. The U.S. has not drafted military personnel since 1972 but maintains a registry in case the draft is reinstated.
"On Veterans Day, it is appropriate to recognize the important and outstanding contributions women have made to our military throughout American history," Kearney, a Cincinnati Democrat, said in a press release. "As integration barriers fall and combat restrictions are lifted for women in the armed services, this resolution urges Congress to take a critical stride for women's equality in the U.S. military by calling on them to register for the selective service."

2013 Quinnipiac University pollĀ found Americans backed women in combat roles but were divided about whether they should be drafted -- 59 percent of men said women should be drafted while only 48 percent of women held the same opinion.'
