Club's entry charges on the basis of sex withdrawn

This is something that happened recently in my city (Christchurch); a new club opened up called Club 22 (a lot of bars/clubs have been opening since the massive earthquake here) - founded by a 20 year old girl. This particular club decided it would charge $5 entry fee for women and for men a ridiculous $22 to get in - with the claimed intention of apparently "to stop the drunk, stupid boys from ruining other people's enjoyment" and essentially creating a continuous ladies' night out bar.

Here was the original article, noticeably the media doesn't seem to have a problem with this kind of discrimination.

Apparently though, there was some outcry and some complaints and they decided to simply charge both men and women $5: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/4867257/Clubs-playing-field-levels-out. So yeah, ultimately this kind of discrimination is hard to stop on a legal level simply because it falls into a grey area of the law. Of course, if you did just this in the reverse case or on the basis of any race there'd be national outcry.

Comment from the founder: 'We weren't trying to be sexist, we're not man-haters, we're not a gay bar or a gentlemen's club as one person called us, we're a bar for everyone.'

Right, sure.
