Abusegate Profiteers
From MANN reader Ed:
Every year around this time lobbyists for the domestic violence industry anoint themselves with sackcloth and ashes. They travel to the state legislature, hat in hand, pleading for more money to help all the abused women that shelters had to turn away the past year.
But these lobbyists conveniently leave out the fact that many shelter directors are making very good money. Here are 3 examples:
- At Safe Horizon shelter in New York City, nine senior managers take in over $100,000 a year: http://mensnewsdaily.com/2009/10/23/well-heeled-abuse-shelter-implicated-in-nyc-housing-scam/
- In Dallas, Family Place director Paige Flink rakes in $163,000 annually in salary and benefits.
- In Florida, Another Way director Donna Fagan receives $95,000 – that’s more than local bank presidents make
Want to find out the salary of shelter directors in your area? Go to www2.guidestar.org, enter the name of the shelter, and pull up their 990 forms. Interested in seeing the total revenues of the state domestic violence coalitions and the salaries of their executive directors? http://www.mediaradar.org/state_dv_coalition_info.php It’s all in the public record.
The domestic violence industry is callous to victims’ needs, harmful to families, and unaccountable to the public. People shouldn’t be allowed to live on easy street while discriminating against male victims of domestic violence.
Let’s get the word out about the abusegate profiteers.
