'Someone needs to speak up for men, so it had better be me. After years of being vilified for their shortcomings - be them in the kitchen, nursery or boudoir - men now stand accused of being the 'weaker' of the two sexes.

A new survey claims that men are not only more likely than women to become ill, they are also more likely to pull a 'sickie' in order to skive off work. Women, on the other hand, soldier on, aided by stronger immune systems.

Now, I am as suspicious of surveys as I am of political party manifestos - and this one was probably compiled by a coven of man-hating spinsters.'
