College professor asserts men need more stress in their lives

From Marc A.: In this article, Sociology professor Scott Coltrane is quoted saying men have not added enough stress to their lives until the past decade and that they now are no longer "off the hook" as they are expected to do more childraising and housework. How ironic that all these lazy, stress-free men have for decades climbed in Coltrane's sewers, collected his garbage and fixed his streets so he can get to his cushy job and talk about how lazy and stress-free men have been.

You can send a letter to the editor at letters-at-usatoday.com and editor-at-usatoday.com and you can email Coltrane directly at coltrane-at-uoregon.edu.

Reminds me of Professor Christine Littleton's comment in the Daily Bruin that "It is women who do the work of the world" which Glenn Sacks slammed in a subsequent op-ed. Or maybe it's just "boys are stupid, throw rocks at them" all over again. I guess it's not enough that men make 92% of job deaths, 70% of job injuries, work 90% of overtime and die younger and more often for the 10 leading causes of death including stress-related ones like stroke. And never mind that a recent 25-nation study by economists from Berlin, Brussels and Texas found men do their fair share of housework when we look at all types of work combined, both in and out of the home. The University of Maryland found the exact same thing.

In fact research shows most men would take a pay cut or quit their jobs if their partners could support the family. It is not men who have refused to be child-rearers, it is women who have chosen to stay primary parents. Women are much more likely than men to have the option of staying home after graduating from college while men still don’t have that option anywhere near the same degree women do. They're either primary breadwinners or on the streets. So they take high-risk, high-hour and high-stress jobs to fulfill what is expected of them, only to then get bashed by ignoramus academics who sit at their desks and talk about how lazy men are.

He doesn't know anything about the linkage here:
biology-->male dominance hierarchy-->competition-->stress-->increased
cortisol level-->metabolic syndrome-->shorter lifespan than women. So, if men have not "added enough stress", why are their lifespans decreasing compared to womens?

I'd like to see him attempt to answer that question.

While I agree with Ax I also know the misandrists will smugly claim that men die earlier and committ suicide more often becuase they are more violent. They avoid the physical data and the hormonal differences. If they were to admit those differences their "it's all socialization" mantra would evaporate and they would no longer be able to blame men so easily. At this point since they rely so heavily on socialization as a reason for all behavior they can claim that men are CHOOSING to be violent etc. and with the right socialization (their way) men would automatically become, gulp, more like women! lol
