Latest AmEx Commercial to Offend Men

There is a commercial running now for the American Express business card showing a man at an airport counter buying a ticket for an important business trip. He plans to pay for it by credit card, but the woman behind the counter sees that the card has a picture of cats on it. this does not meet with her approval [apparently not manly enough for her judgmentally sexist mind] and she signals for two guards to come over and take him away.

One of the guards is a woman who puts on rubber gloves for the obvious reason. Does anyone think that this company would run an ad showing a male guard putting on rubber gloves to examine a female customer. Of course not! I called the company and spoke to a customer service rep who agreed with me and would pass on my comments to management. I also intend to call the advertising department to voice my concern about this issue. I hope others will join me. Contact info here.

Ed. note: Someone please provide a link to the commercial on-line, if available. I went looking for it but could not find it.

The competition is fierce in the Card issuing Side of the Business. And this is making fun of the Capital One Commercials. AMEX has an outstanding program for Commercial and Purchasing Cards. I am in the Electronic Payments business.

This is in my view a non issue. Intended to reach Purchasing Depts. Who make decisions on their choice of Card Programs or Treasury Management Officers. If you want to make more impact contact the Association for Financial Professionals instead. They make the decisions for States and Corporations. That will make more headway.

...But the commercial is for a Business card. The man comes up with a card, saying he's going on a business trip, that has kittens on it. The joke in the commercial is not that it's not manly enough, but that it's a bad idea for the business traveler to use a card like that.

They have a second commercial that shows a man at a business lunch with a group of German businessmen, and when he puts his kitty credit card down, they say "He's not our idea of a professional!" (in a more condescending and humorous way,) and get out of there promising not to do business with him to each other. Again, a slam on the card used by a businessman, not a man.

It sure is nice to see a story on this site about a commercial that isn't a fraction as offensive as a lot of the misandric ads that used to circulate. I too think it's a nonissue. I like cats, and I know a few men who also like cats and own at least one. Even if the commercial was making fun of men who like cats I would say "ow hurt me some more". It's a pretty stupid thing to make fun of someone for.

THE THREE RESPONDENTS TO MY COMMENT ABOUT THE AMEX COMMERCIAL DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE I RAISED. I POINTED OUT THAT THE FEMALE GUARD WHO CAME TO ESCORT HIM OUT OF THE AREA WAS PUTTING ON RUBBER GLOVES FOR THE OBVIOUS REASON. IMAGINE THE REACTION IF THE GENDERS WERE REVERSED. I AM WAITING FOR AN EMAIL RESPONSE FROM MINDSHARE WORLD, THE SISTER COMPANY OF AMEX, WHO CREATED THE AD. I WILL PUT THEIR. RESPONSE ON THE WEBSITE

Actually yeah, you do have a point. That does make it more offensive. I just called Amex and let them know what I think.
