Men Break Down Watching Footage Of Female Genital Mutilation, Vow To Speak Out Against Practice

'Sometimes it takes a glimpse into a dark reality in order to spark positive change.

In a video produced by advocacy group Safe Hands for Mothers, young men were asked if they knew what female genital mutilation, or FGM, is, and none of them did. The men then watched clips from a documentary that showed the abusive practice -- which partially or entirely removes the female genitals for non-medical reasons (the clips were recreations and did not show actual victims, according to Safe Hands for Mothers).

Many of the young men cringed, squirmed in their seats and cried as the disturbing footage played.

"This is just barbaric," one of them said.

"I felt powerless," another man noted. "I felt like I couldn't do anything to help."

The video concludes with the men saying, "Now that I know, I say 'no' to FGM.'

"First off to all u fucking retarts out there. All men should get circumcised because its a cleaner penise. Circumcision is a safe and normal procedure done to millions of infants or adults. "Decided to watch this video,as my hubby & I are expecting a baby boy in June. All the negative stuff I have come in contact with is becoming more & more bullshit in my opinion. For goodness sake, this baby isn't even crying during the worst part of the procedure. You get a doctor who knows what they're doing & it makes all the difference. This isn't genital "mutilation." Parents should always make decisions for their children that they think are best. This waiting for the child to decide is nonsense. Maybe in that case we should let them decide what to eat, what to wear, when to go to school, etc. Crazy talk. I'm for circ all the way!"

Really, no objection here to what they did. Stopping FGM is a good and noble cause, 1000%. But so is stopping MGM and they are, or ought to be, the same effort since the objections to FGM are the same as those to MGM. What is missing from the effort described by the article is the other half of it.

Now if only all women had the same reaction to MGM. The amount of support this practice gets from women truly disturbs me.
