Activists cheer Scottish government rethink on new women’s prison

'Campaigners have welcomed the announcement that the Scottish government is scrapping controversial plans to build a new women’s prison as evidence of how politics can be done differently in post-referendum Scotland.

The new justice secretary, Michael Matheson, on Monday called for a more “radical and ambitious” approach to female offending as he announced that he was shelving the £75m plan to replace Scotland’s notorious women-only prison, Cornton Vale, with a new facility proposed by his predecessor, Kenny MacAskill, in Inverclyde.

Critics of the plan had argued that it runs contrary to the Scottish government’s own advice on treatment of women offenders. The Scottish government commissioned a report by the former lord advocate Dame Elish Angiolini QC in 2012, which highlighted the need to invest in therapeutic services at a local level, with a role for a much smaller specialist facility for the minority of women offenders who pose a significant risk to the public.'

Check out the pic -- that one woman's "cell" is nicer than any college dorm room I ever saw no matter what effort was put into it and by whom. Commit a crime, enjoy your time -- literally -- provided your female and in Scotland.

So I wonder how they'll now handle low-risk male offenders? Probably as they are currently: into the nasty clink with you!

Not surprising. Hundreds of years of female chauvinism and thousands of years of chivalry have created a society where we don't punish females and don't hold them accountable. Nope. In most societies the only criminals are male because for thousands of years men had to bear the brunt of female relatives crimes as well as any of their own. We as a society have been conditioned (especially since the rise of female chauvinism) to believe that females are sweet and kind and faithful and innocent. All of which are absolute baloney, but hundreds of years of indoctrination is hard to overcome. Hence men will continue to be blamed for all the ills of the world and women will continue to be regarded as innocent victims. This might be the 21st century, but where female crime is concerned, it may as well the the 14th century.

The poor innocent woman needs therapy but the evil man needs prison.

I had a random thought about male aggressiveness. Men supposedly commit more violence because they're innately more aggressive. Maybe. But my random thought is that perhaps men commit more violence because they know--thanks to chivalry--that they're the disposable sex, the one expected to die and sacrifice his life for women (and children). Maybe he doesn't want to die.
