Ahh to be a US voter now that November 2014 is almost here...
It makes me almost think it's worth it to pay these clowns just for the entertainment value they produce, and not just the whacky feminist Dems, either. I mean really, it's as predictable as the sunrise that anyone in a political office these days requiring a speechifying profile is going to give you something to laugh at sooner rather than later. But still, it's overpriced comedy, isn't it?
But some public offices are truly administrative in nature, the role being to serve as bureaucratic heads directly accountable to the voters should corruption be uncovered. Examples include such unsung heroes of election day, as the offices of County Clerk, Sheriff, Comptroller, etc. Congressoids, mayors, county executives, etc.-- we can survive incompetent and/or corrupt suchwhats so long as their tenure is temporary and voters have the sense to boot them ASAP. But those other less-heralded offices? Incompetent/corrupt people in those spell serious trouble sooner rather than later. I think this is why ppl elected to those positions at some point get re-elected consistently b/c once you find a good one, there's no reason to risk swapping them. And, I've also noticed, party politics can go hang when speaking of those far more operationally important positions. Voters care not if their comptroller, county clerk, or sheriff is a Dem, Rep, indy, or anything else, so long as they're good at their job. Counties can exist fine w/out county executives. But w/out comptrollers, sheriffs, or county clerks? Total gov'tal chaos, lawlessness, and the worst possible consequence, a shortage of coffee throughout the land, should any of these go vacant for even a single day. Yes, an ugly sight indeed. :) OK, just having some fun there. But you get the idea.
