"Circumcision breaches human rights of the child"

'"To circumcise a child without medical reasons and without the child's consent, runs contrary... to the child's human rights and the fundamental principles of medical ethics," they write in a debate article in the Dagens Nyheter daily on Saturday.

The ombudsman Fredrik Malmberg, together with representatives from the Swedish Society of Medicine (SLS), the Swedish Society of Health Professionals (Vårdförbundet), the Swedish Paediatric Society (BLF) and the Swedish Association of Pediatric Surgeons (SLF), argues that Swedish law requires that the child's will be taken into account wherever possible.

Circumcision is a procedure which is typically carried out at a very young age and it is this issue of consent which is paramount, they argue.

"We consider circumcision of boys without the child's consent to be in contravention of article 12 of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) which gives children the right to have an opinion in matters which concern them."'

Lots of good news coming out about possibly getting circumcision outlawed.

Also in case anyone is interested, I had been looking for studies on "benefits" of female circumcision and I finally found them...no, I'm not recommending female circumcision. It is just good to have whenever you find yourself in a discussion, because most of society has a hard time wrapping their head around the idea of cutting females. Bringing up these studies is a good comeback when people start mentioning the "benefits" of male circumcision.

I'm hearing word that the European council voted today to outlaw circumcision. Can anyone verify? I have Googled and cannot find any news outlets reporting on this.

Any links or info would be nice : )

Edit:
I changed my subject title as I have more info. Over at the Facebook page "Boys Deserve Better" they have a good explanation as to what occured in Europe today.

There was a debate and a vote and everything went in favor of protecting children's rights in regards to circumcision. I dont believe it's outlawed yet, but it's getting closer.
