Malawi Targets Two Million Males to Go for Circumcision By 2016

'Mangochi — Over 42,000 males in Malawi have undergone Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) since the campaign started last year, Malawi News Agency has learnt.

Speaking to Mana on Tuesday after a stakeholders meeting in Mangochi, Spokesperson in the Ministry of Health, Henry Chimbali said Malawi is expecting to have 2.1 million males who will have undergone Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) by 2016 noting that currently 42,000 males have already gone through the knife.

"Malawi as a country has 42,000 males circumcised already and it is expecting to have 2.1 million males voluntarily circumcised at the hospital by 2016 and that is encouraging," Chimbali said.

He however said it is encouraging to see many youths between the ages of 15 to 24 go for VMMC. He therefore encouraged men to go for VMMC which he said helps in reduction of HIV vulnerability rate by 60 percent.'

It's enough to make a die-hard atheist/agnostic like Christopher Hitchens (and forgive me, but I am only speculating, as I can't speak for someone else even when he is alive without his explicit permission) instead hope for a post-corporeal existence wherein yes, some power that can hold you accountable actually does.

Encouraging men to get circumcised so they are less likely to get or spread HIV when in fact... it just isn't true. Instead, such men will now think they can go off care-free and have unprotected sex with whomever their preferred partners are after they get a substantial portion of the most protective and sensitive parts of their anatomy (much less penis alone) cut off.

I can only imagine the consequences as this mythology unfolds. The scourge of HIV is already devastating sub-Saharan Africa. What will it look like in a mere 10 years hence?
