Korea: Women-Only Parking Lots to Debut

Story here.

'The Seoul Metropolitan Government will introduce female-only spaces in all parking lots from April.

The spaces will be painted pink with emblems of women in the center. The special parking lots will be longer and wider than normal parking spaces. Road parking lots will be mandated to secure more than 10 percent of space as women-only spaces ― and over 20 percent for buildings.

Under the plan, the city plans to increase women-only parking lots by up to 7,500 spaces this year from the current 2,000. Accordingly, more than 31 percent of public parking lots will be set up as women-only spaces. Female-only parking lots will be placed near elevators and will maintain over 70 lux of light.'

As much as I would love these bigger parking stalls in the front, I also recognize this as being extremely sexist and unfair.

Maybe they should have gender neutral 'bad driver' spots in the back for people that can't park straight and need the bigger stalls (it's a running joke in my family about how I can't park straight - something about spatial relationships).

They seem to have special stalls for everyone now (except men). At Baby's R Us they have priority parking for pregnant women and at my local YMCA they just put up signs for priority parking for "fuel efficient vehicles only". Ironically this makes up only a small portion of their clientele. The YMCA makes more money from people that have large families and therefor need bigger cars.

Honestly, I wonder who thinks up all this stuff. When will businesses learn that offending your customers can't be good.

no offense to anyone who's overweight, but I'm seeing more and more women these days who could benefit from a longer walk from car to office..so why are the spaces closer instead? Possibly becuase the "liberated" women are still wearing high heels, to attract men so they can then be rude to them.

Thx for making me grin yet again, ax.

But yeah, it goes without saying that this is a sexist and stupid idea. I agree with Kris.

Actually this has got less to do with woman being weak. This is more to do with woman freaking out about imagined dangers.

Recently they caught a serial killer who killed a few woman - mostly woman in the sex trade and also a few taxi driver raping some woman passengers. So a few people are hurt and all of the are afraid for nothing so the government makes some sort of general concession and they woman should feel all safe.

Anyways judge this in conjunction with this article

Also this is a crock because you should see actual parking in Korea. Their is no place to park! This is a little nice little blurb that does noting in the end.

are protectors of women and children.

that's a fact, always has been. millions have
died defending women and children, in war after war.

so let me get this straight. now we have
NO good protectors/men in women only parking lots?

sounds like a potential killing field,
for rapists, thieves, druggies looking for
some easy $$, and murderers.

good job there feminists.

suggestion for the parking lot signs -

"no men allowed here. only strong women
who can do anything men can do, only better".

THAT should keep them safe. Ha!

maybe a sign or two reminding all that
guns and knives will not be tolerated either.

they should have waited until april 1 to put this out,
when stupid jokes rule the day.

Isn't it liberated women that wear flats, and non-feminist that wear heels? Ur...no..wait, it's non-feminist that are bare-foot and pregnant.

I can't keep track anymore, but I love my heels. They look great with tight jeans.

I think it's non-feminists who wear heels. That must be why high heels drive me crazy. I could never put my finger on it. Thanks Kris!

Also, that was a good point, daveinga. Some women would be able to defend themselves, but it still sounds like a potentially dangerous idea.

On the other hand, it does seem that there is the occasional airhead who claims to be a feminist, but wears them anyway, along with loads of make-up, as a "set-up" to reject men. So I guess in the sense of being rude to men, these women are feminists.
