UK: 'Bad girl' statistics get worse

Story here. Excerpt:

'More city schoolgirls are landing in juvenile detention now than a decade ago - while crime among boys is dropping, a new report reveals. Last year, 1,037 girls younger than 16 entered city detention facilities, up from 772 in 1992, according to the report by the Citizens' Committee for Children.'

Starts at para. 4:

'Experts blamed the spike among girls on many things, from increases in family violence and female aggression to violent images in the media.

"There is a lot of victimization leading to this," said CCC boss Gail Nayowith.

"Whether physical, sexual or emotional," she said, "[it] can sometimes be the first step to lead them to delinquency."

Other advocates say the rise could be partially because authorities and parents are more willing to prosecute young females than in decades past.'

To put the icing on the cake, note the article ends with:

'We need to find out what's going on with these girls, why they are getting into trouble," Nayowith said.

"We need to understand what their needs are."'

I have yet to read of any public official suggesting that delinquent boys need to have their needs understood or suggest they were in fact the victims. It seems society is gleefully disposed to locking up delinquent boys post-haste but wants to 'understand' and 'serve' the needs of girls who go so far even as to commit murder. No 2x-standard here, no siree.

mcc99 buddy, you missed the best quote in the whole piece!

Dr. Herbert Mandell, medical director for the charity KidsPeace, blamed a "breakdown in some of the supports in the community and home."

He told the Daily News, "Girls just aren't getting the kind of protection from dad, older brother, siblings and schools as they used to, and that's very sad."

That's right folks, it's her father and all the girls male relatives that are to blame!

What kind of crap is that? I need to do some more research on the Kidspeace charity, they sound deadly.

Couldn't agree with you more though mcc99, society just loves to lock up and label young boys for even trivial things (which in my mind anyway explains the ~ 4 to 1 difference between boys and girls getting detention) but does everything they can to help young girls who are in trouble with the law for even very serious offenses.

Just another reason why males are the second class of human beings.
