University group seeks to spread "stop beating your wife" message to random men in bars

Story here. Excerpt:

'IOWA CITY - The majority of violent crimes are committed by men, but the majority of men are not violent, University of Iowa graduate student Jerrod Koon says.

Getting those men to speak up against violence, especially violence against women, is the key to changing the problem, said Koon, coordinator of the Men's Anti-Violence Council.

Like-minded UI students, faculty and staff attended an open house last night hosted by the new group. About 25 people mingled during the first hour of the two-hour event.

UI freshman Sterling Martin, 18, heard about the open house from a friend, and after getting some information, said he thinks he would like to volunteer with the group. He can see where young college men might be hesitant to join an anti-violence group if they think it is about "taking away their masculinity."'

The majority of violent crimes are committed by men, but the majority of men are not violent, University of Iowa graduate student Jerrod Koon says.

I'll put that in the true but misleading column. It's true that the majority of violent crimes are committed by men. But those crimes are usually in the commission of theft or black market activity. Rather then taking interest in the fact that men are more likely to commit violent crime; it's more useful and less misleading to ask WHY men are more likely to commit violent crime.

The answer is of course because men are much more likely to live under the poverty line for a variety of reasons. One being that there is a much higher variance in the level of male intelligence, and this results in a much higher variance in a given mans level of income.

Another, and probably more important reason is the fact that Western Society looks down on men marrying 'up'. So an
unfortunate man can't just latch on to the nearest wealthy women and suck her dry, like the more devious sex can. Mens lack of political power also mens that a guy can't automatically get an 18 year annuity just for having sex with a stranger and getting her pregnant like a woman can either.

Of course Mr Martin was probably referring to intimate partner violence given the title of this article, and the goal of the group he joined. In that case of course his answer is misleading at best and totally false at worst. As we all know women are much more likely to engage in intimate partner violence then men. Given that intimate partner violence is mostly instigated by women perhaps this group should to to women only gyms, and nail salons in order to encourage wives not to beat their husbands.

Excellent post above, but quite frankly, what a ridiculously idiotic student.

Men see anti-violence campaigns as taking away their masculinity? What crap!

I'd actually be all for this, if they also addressed the problem of violence against males as well. It would be great if somebody would just start an anti-all forms of violence club.
