The Top 5 Killers of Men

Article here. Excerpt:

'Heart disease is the number one killer of men, claiming the lives of nearly 400,000 fathers, friends, brothers, and sons every year. Often, the difference between life and death is razor thin—remembering to pop an aspirin, not delaying your trip to the E.R.

This week is National Men's Health Week, which was created by Congress in 1994 to raise the awareness of the health threats uniquely facing men. To commemorate, we’ve put together a list of the most popular ways to die as a man in America. Collectively, these diseases kill nearly one million of us annually. And, chances are, your lifestyle or genetic profile puts you at risk for at least one of them.

But, as Jeff Hale learned, our fates are not sealed. If you understand your risks, and learn how to negate them, you can outrun the reaper. Here’s how:'

Angela Epstein: Absent fathers can't be likened to killer drivers

Blog entry here. Excerpt:

'And what a message it was. Doubtless leaving wife Sam and a team of hired help holding the fort (and the baby), David Cameron declared war on absent fathers, storming that they should be stigmatised by society in the same way as drink drivers.

I realise that having Nick Clegg yoked round his neck like a clingy girlfriend has put our prime minister under unimaginable stress.
...
How does an absent father compare with a reckless driver who, fuelled by a tank full of booze, turns his car into a killing machine?

Perhaps our esteemed leader should pay a visit to the Partington home of Amanda and Phil Peak, whose two boys Arron, 10, and Ben, eight, were killed after drunken footballer Luke McCormick ploughed into their family car at 100mph on the M6.'

Honoring Men: A Manifesto for Conscious Women

Last fall, Arjuna Ardagh and Gay Hendricks shared the Manifesto for the Conscious Man on Facebook and then, more recently, a video, called “Dear Woman.” Arjuna also posted The Art of Worshiping Women at the Huffington Post. These pieces triggered strong reactions in many, ranging from appreciation to anger and everything in between.

The intention was clearly to honor women. And, many women felt acknowledged, and appreciated the collective apology from men. Yet, it was also inadvertently dishonoring, and even insulting, to many men, including my husband John.

We could say men have just as much to be honored for, and women have just as much to apologize for. Maybe even more.

In any regard, we decided to balance out the story here.

Circumcision funds cut amid state budget woes

Article here. Excerpt:

'DENVER — A nationwide debate about circumcisions for newborn boys, combined with cash-strapped public health budgets, has Colorado taking sides with 17 other states that no longer fund Medicaid coverage of the once widely accepted procedure.

For years, Colorado lawmakers considered doing away with funding for circumcisions under Medicaid — a move that would save the state $186,500 a year.

Now facing a seismic budget shortfall estimated to be $1 billion at the beginning of this year, lawmakers finally approved the change, which takes effect July 1.'

The matter of circumcisions has gotten contentious in California, where San Francisco will be the first city to hold a public vote in November on whether to ban the practice.'

Uganda: Women want say in circumcision of spouses

Article here. Excerpt:

'WOMEN are complaining that they are not being involved in the decisions to circumcise their children and husbands, a study report revealed last.

The report on women’s perceptions on medical male circumcision (MMC) for HIV prevention in Kampala and Kapchorwa districts was launched on Friday by Health Rights Action Group (HAG) and Mama’s Club, a psychosocial support group For HIV Positive Mothers.

“A man suddenly returns home with a circumcision wound without consulting the wife yet women feel, as stakeholders, that they should be consulted regarding such matters,” Marion Natukunda the Programme manager for Mama’s Club, said.

While presenting the report last Thursday at Katikati restaurant, Nankunda said women would like to have their babies circumcised but are not allowed to make such decisions. When their husbands are not supportive, it often leads to domestic violence. The study was done in Kampala and Kapchorwa.'

'An eight-minute video on YouTube in which “conscious men” apologize to the women of the world is drawing tears and praise — as well as verbal brickbats — from around the world.

“The response has been extraordinary,” said Arjuna Ardagh, one of the two men behind the “Dear Woman” video, which had more than 280,000 views a few days after it was posted.

'Anti-feminist' Zurich conference threatens to stir controversy

'Another anti-feminist conference being held in Switzerland this weekend promises to ruffle a few feathers. Last year, a similar gathering caused so much of a flap it had to be moved to a secret location. This time round, the conference set for Zurich features Monika Ebeling, dubbed an “ex-feminist” by the media. Ebeling says she wants to address the “bitterness” between the sexes. WRS’s Jo Fahy explains what all the fuss is about.'

Please Help: Debunking the gender wage gap myth

A recent article appeared in the New Zealand Herald here of which Alasdair Thompson, chief executive of the Employers and Manufacturers Association correctly pointed out the gender wage gap is a result of personal choice such as women taking the time to have children. He is currently under attack by those who paint the wage gap as purely discrimination - when there is no evidence for that - particularly by Catherine Delahunty (Green MP) and Helen Kelly (Council of Trade Unions) who are both backing unnecessary amendments to the Equal Pay Act.

So what I want you to do, via Facebook: write a message to Catherine Delahunty (here) and Helen Kelly (here) debunking the gender wage gap in regards to discrimination. Use US data too (e.g. Department of Labor stats*) to show that it has been debunked internationally despite the myth being perpetrated.
