'The Paycheck Fairness Act failed to become law in the 111th Congress, when the House and Senate had overwhelming Democratic majorities and President Obama, in his State of the Union Address, called the bill "common sense."

Why?

The act is based on a misapplied statistic, that women earn 77 cents on a man's dollar. This is true when comparing all women's wages with all men's wages, but not when comparing men and women with the same experience in the same job. The 77 cent statistic combines men and women who work in different jobs with different numbers of hours. When job, experience, and hours of work are taken into account, rigorous economic studies show women make about the same as men—95 cents on a man's dollar.

When women believe they are the victims of discrimination, they have many laws under which to seek justice, such as the Equal Pay Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Civil Rights Act.

'Doctors should screen all of their female patients for signs of partner violence, whether face-to-face or through a waiting room questionnaire, a new report suggests.

The review of the current evidence on screening for partner abuse, from researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, is the first step toward new recommendations on screening from the government-sponsored United States Preventive Services Task Force.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to three in 10 U.S. women have experienced rape, stalking or physical violence by a partner. Other studies suggest as many as half of women will experience psychological aggression from an intimate partner at some point in their lives.'

'Washington, DC/May 8, 2012 — States that enacted mandatory arrest policies saw a 60 percent increase in intimate partner homicides, according to a Harvard U. study. Now, Stop Abusive and Violent Environments (SAVE) is calling on lawmakers involved in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to halt funding for such lethal policies.

Beginning in 1994, VAWA pushed states to change their domestic violence arrest standards from probable cause to the more aggressive mandatory arrest policy. Under mandatory arrest, the accused person is taken away in handcuffs if the police are called, even in the absence of evidence of physical violence.

VAWA’s 2005 reauthorization did away with the mandatory arrest language, but states continued to enforce these harmful policies. SAVE insists that the House of Representatives insert language in its version of VAWA that would stop taxpayer funding of arrest without probable cause.'

Cristal Paulette Richardson (right) faces a murder charge in the gruesome death of Cedric Lamont Owens, 34. He was found dead in a room at a Motel 6 in the 8500 block of East R.L. Thornton Freeway about 5:20 p.m., police said.

Motel video surveillance showed Richardson one day earlier renting the room alone. About 4 on Saturday, a security guard said he heard man and woman "in a loud verbal and physical disturbance" in the third-floor room, police said.'
