In Defense Of The Child

Article here. Excerpt:

'Since children – especially babies and infants – cannot consent to procedures that would violate their right to bodily integrity, the right to consent is legally vested in the parents or guardians of the child. But they cannot legally consent to any procedure: violations of bodily integrity are permissible only insofar as they benefit the child (for example, the consent to have vital surgery performed on the child).

SAVE: Tell VP Biden that Every MAN Deserves to be Safe from Violence

September 13 marked the 18-year anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Vice President Biden issued a statement commemorating this anniversary. Included in his statement: VAWA "was founded on the basic premise that every woman deserves to be safe from violence." VP Biden goes on to give statistics only about female victims of domestic violence. He concludes by stating "I urge Congress to keep the promise we made to our daughters and our granddaughters on that day-that we would work together to keep them safe." Statement: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/09/13/statement-vice-president-eighteenth-anniversary-violence-against-women-a

Biden's glaring omission of male victims, time and time again, seems as if he is putting forth the contention that men don't deserve to be safe from violence. What other conclusion can one reach?

Women's Room - Feminism and going too far

Article here. Excerpt:

'The difference between feminism and misandry is often not understood. However, it’s an important distinction because it’s the difference between treating men like lesser humans and trying to gain equal rights for women. Feminism is defined as a collection of movements and ideologies that are aimed at establishing and defending equal rights for women. Misandry, on the other hand, is the male equivalent of misogyny and is defined as a hatred of men.

Panel Unanimously Decides to Regulate a Circumcision Ritual

Story here. Excerpt:

'The New York City Board of Health passed a regulation on Thursday that will require consent from parents before an infant can have a form of Jewish ritual circumcision, prevalent in parts of the ultra-Orthodox community, in which the circumciser uses his mouth to remove blood from the incision.
...
Indeed, some panel members said they believed that requiring consent did not go far enough. “It’s crazy that we allow this to go on,” said Dr. Joel A. Forman, a professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

NY Times: Why Men Fail

Yet more! Article here. Seems to be a male-bashing article prominently featured in the Times about once every other day, and usually on Sunday for those lucky Sunday-only subscribers who just gotta have their crossword puzzle/sudoku/male-bashing fix. Excerpt:

'In elementary and high school, male academic performance is lagging. Boys earn three-quarters of the D’s and F’s. By college, men are clearly behind. Only 40 percent of bachelor’s degrees go to men, along with 40 percent of master’s degrees.

Thanks to their lower skills, men are dropping out of the labor force. In 1954, 96 percent of the American men between the ages of 25 and 54 worked. Today, that number is down to 80 percent. In Friday’s jobs report, male labor force participation reached an all-time low.

Millions of men are collecting disability. Even many of those who do have a job are doing poorly. According to Michael Greenstone of the Hamilton Project, annual earnings for median prime-age males have dropped by 28 percent over the past 40 years.

Kentucky Man Sues Doctor For Amputating His Penis

Story here. Excerpt:

'FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky man did not consent to have his penis amputated and the doctor who performed the surgery had options other than removing the organ, even though cancer had been found during a surgery, an attorney argued Tuesday to the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

Kevin George, the lawyer for Phillip Seaton of Waddy, told the appeals panel that the medical waiver signed by his client contains extremely broad language and that Dr. John Patterson should have sought consent before removing the penis.

“The point is … a patient has a right,” George said. “The doctor does not have the right to do whatever he wants, even if it turns out to be reasonable.”'

NY Times: Why Fathers Really Matter

Article here. The NYT spin is that it's all biological. No mention of the many other ways dads count. And predictably it concludes with the suggestion that when things go wrong for a kid, it's dad's fault. One thing you can say for the Times, they're as predictable as Big Ben's (now "Elizabeth Tower") chimes. Excerpt:

Men’s Rights “Hate Speech”

Article here. Excerpt:

'The following poster is being placed prominently in multiple cities in Canada, starting in Vancouver but also elsewhere. Similar posters with similar messages are beginning to appear in Seattle and other parts of the United States, as well as Australia and the UK. In every place so far that they’ve gone up, they’ve faced ridicule, mocking, and, worst of all, received regular vandalism and torn down in locations where it’s perfectly legal to place and display them. They have been classified by people who call themselves “feminists” as “hate-speech.”

The statistics from these posters are from the Canadian government and apply to Canada nationwide; statistics for the US, Australia, and other advanced Western nations are very similar, however. The poster reads:

The End of Men Is Here? 14 Signs And Consequences Of Male Decline

Article here. Excerpt:

'When journalist Hanna Rosin talks about the "End of Men," she doesn't mean that men are destined to die out (although statistics show that couples in many parts of the world increasingly want female children) or destined to become the indentured servants of a matriarchal society. She means that as the world has changed over the last 50 years, women have changed with it, to their advantage, and men ... haven't.

In Rosin's new book "The End of Men and the Rise of Women," based on her often quoted 2010 Atlantic cover story "The End of Men," she explores the decline of men, how it's bad for both men and women and how "people describe this as a feminist triumph, but it is not entirely," as she recently told The Huffington Post's Lisa Belkin. Here are 14 arguments Rosin makes in one of the most anticipated books of the year.'

The silent war on noncollege-educated white men

Article here. Excerpt:

'Much ink has been spilled this election cycle about the so-called “war on women,” but as the Wall Street Journal notes, “In 2010, young American women had a median income higher than that of their male peers in 1,997 out of 2,000 metropolitan regions.”

That same year, Hanna Rosen observed: ”Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are now women too. And for every two men who get a college degree this year, three women will do the same.”

There is no political benefit in discussing this phenomenon, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed by academics. From Kay Hymowitz’s “Manning Up: How The Rise of Women Has Turned Men Into Boys” (listen to my podcast with Hymowitz here) — to Rosen’s “The End of Men and the Rise of Women” — some observers are keenly aware of the trend.

In recent years, women have also been hit by the economic downturn. Still, you won’t hear much about the plight of men on the campaign trail.

Lacrosse lawyers fight Duke subpoena

Article here. Excerpt:

'DURHAM – Duke University lawyers trying to fend off a lawsuit want to question and perhaps make witnesses out of two attorneys who are representing three members of the school’s 2005-06 men’s lacrosse team.

Durham lawyer Bob Ekstrand on Labor Day filed a motion to quash subpoenas Duke’s lawyers have issued to him and fellow attorney Stefanie Smith. They invoked attorney/client privilege.

The subpoenas came as Duke gathered evidence for its defense against the lawsuit from 38 former members of the team that gained unwanted fame in 2006 after stripper Crystal Mangum lodged a false rape charge.

Ekstrand’s three clients are not among the 38, but they are pursuing a lawsuit of their own that closely parallels the claims lawyers for the 38 have made.'
