'ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2008) — Boys with asthma who are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke have higher degrees of hyperactivity, aggression, depression and other behavioral problems, according to researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

In a study posted online ahead of print by the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, the researchers said behavioral problems increase along with higher exposure levels, but they added even low levels of tobacco smoke may be detrimental to behavior.

Interestingly, although girls in the study were on average exposed to higher levels of tobacco smoke than boys, the exposure did not lead to an increase in behavioral problems among them, investigators said. Dauphin County prosecutor Edward M. Marsico Jr. told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that he is examining the case of Walter Andre Sharpe Jr., who has been unable to recover the money even after establishing that he isn't the girl's father.

He served four six-month jail terms for not keeping up with support payments between 2001 and 2005, then lost his job. Petitions he filed for DNA testing were opposed by the court's domestic relations officials and denied by the judge.

In May 2007, the paternity order against Walter Sharpe was overturned after the girl's mother and grandmother failed to show up to a court hearing. But the judge ruled in October that Walter Sharpe was not entitled to compensation.'

'HERMISTON -- A teacher's assistant who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing teenage boys won't have to spend time in prison.

Following a plea bargain, Umatilla County Judge Garry Reynolds this week sentenced Roxana Mata to three years of probation on charges of rape and sexual abuse.

Mata, 23, must pay a $500 fine for each victim and can't have contact with children other than her own two kids and the one she is expecting.

She must also perform community service, write letters of apology to her victims, take part in an alcohol program and register as a sex offender.'

'The mother of Shannon Matthews was today found guilty of the kidnap of her own daughter.

Karen Matthews, 33, was convicted alongside her co-accused Michael Donovan after a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

The court had heard how they kept Shannon drugged and leashed to the loft to stop her escaping during her 24-day ordeal in a 'cynical' plot to eventually claim £50,000 reward money for her safe return.

'REFUSING to provide domestic violence programmes for male victims because of gender-based analysis is against the US constitution, a Californian court has ruled.

The decision in the case of Woods v Shewry is the highest-level judicial rejection of the concept as a basis for discriminating between men and women who suffer domestic abuse.

Gender-based analysis is also the model on which funding is provided for support for victims in Scotland.

The California case was filed in 2005 by four male victims of domestic violence and the daughter of one of the men against the state of California and various agencies and state-funded domestic violence service providers.

She then casually wiped the blood from her hands in the womens' toilet and continued partying in the bar.

Bright, now 18, was found guilty of murder at Bristol Crown Court and jailed for life yesterday with a minimum term of 12 years."

This story reminds me of an old joke about a NY Times headline: "World to End Tomorrow: Women, Minorities to be Hardest Hit."

I say this because the author argues that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is worse for women while admitting women make up half of the victims of HIV/AIDS. Why is it worse for women? Because women are infected by men, which means men must change their behavior. (The notion that men are likely infected by women apparently does not occur to him.)

His question:

"Is it inevitable fate or the will of God that women everywhere should suffer the greatest stigmatization and discrimination because of HIV and AIDS?"

His answer:
"Biologically, culturally, economically and religiously, women are more susceptible to HIV. In today's world, AIDS has a woman's face. Women total almost 50 percent of the 33.2 million HIV-positive persons worldwide. Of the infected, women comprise 61 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, 40 percent in Asia, and 21 percent in the U.S."
