'The suicide rate among college-age men is increasing at an alarming rate, officials say, but even as schools work to head off the problem, counselors are baffled as to the cause.

"We don't know for certain," said Kristi Casey-Hart, a counselor at Dalton State College in Dalton, Ga. "I think that we put a lot of pressure on men."

While men overall commit suicide more often than women, the gender gap for suicide among young adults is staggering, according to a recent report published by the Boys Project out of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Among 20- to 24-year-olds, 20.7 suicides per 100,000 occur among males, compared with 3.5 per 100,000 among females, said Judith Kleinfeld, director of the Boys Project.

The ratio of suicide among male and females between the ages of 15 and 24 was 5 to 1, she said, and the male and female ratio for that same age range in 1933 was 1.56 to 1.'

It's not that they're not capable. It's that we need to do a better job at meeting the needs of our boys."'

'CENTREVILLE, Md. — A psychiatrist testified that a mother accused of the death of her 3-year-old daughter was so depressed she couldn't stop herself.

Defense witness Dr. David Williamson was one of three psychiatrists who testified Monday. Two others testified for the prosecution in Queen Anne's County Circuit Court in Centreville, saying Victoria Sparrow planned the killing weeks in advance.

The three testified at a hearing to determine if Sparrow was legally insane when she poisoned her daughter. Police say Sparrow killed her daughter, Laci, in December and then tried to kill herself with pills.

Sparrow has pleaded not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. Circuit Judge Thomas G. Ross will decide whether she was insane.'

'Deadra Williams, a 41-year-old West Virginia has been arrested on allegations she sexually assaulted a two-year-old boy. Williams was picked up by police for an incident with a family member that allegedly occurred mid May.

Williams now faces first degree sexual assault charges and remains in the Southern Regional Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

The victim reported the incident to another family member who immediately reported in to police.

Williams was charged with sexual assault back in 2001, but those charges were dismissed pending future investigation.'

"I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting," Maloney said in a statement Monday.

The potentially damaging gaffe comes a week before Maloney's scheduled launch of her Democratic challenge to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand at the polls next fall.

Baruch College's political pro Doug Muzzio said Maloney's use of the N-word is, to be blunt, "stupid."'

In the comments section here, I’ve seen readers (both male and female) express a surprising degree of hatred against men I haven’t personally witnessed in years. One man even expressed a notion I’d thought had long ago been debunked – that anyone showing any sympathy for male victims of DV must secretly be supporting the patriarchy in their efforts to systematically beat women down. 'Male students preparing to enter law school will file a petition with the Constitutional Court against Ewha Womans University Law School, claiming that the admittance of only female students is a violation of their constitutional rights.

Three men said Sunday that Ewha Law School accepts only women for its allotted entrance quota of 100. They said that because the nation's total law school capacity was 2,000, as licensed by the Ministry of Education and Science Technology, the school effectively eliminated 100 slots for men by excluding them from its entrance exam, leaving only 1,900 total slots, they claimed.

``Ewha Law School should alter its prospectus to receive only females, or cancel the license of the law school itself, so men and women can have an equal opportunity,'' he said.

'HAMILTON — As one of the few police departments in the area that offers training for carry-conceal weapons permits, it’s no surprise that Hamilton city police have hit another milestone.

In June, it held its first women-only CCW class, which is proving popular based on the number of enrollees.

The current class has around 30 women, up from the typical five to 10 in a co-educational class.
