Police: Gatti's death a suicide, must release wife

Story here. Excerpt:

'RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Boxer Arturo Gatti's death was ruled a suicide by police Thursday and a judge ordered the release of his wife, who was once suspected of killing the former champion.

Lead investigator Paulo Alberes told The Associated Press that authorities decided Gatti killed himself on July 11 while at a seaside resort in northeastern Brazil.
...
A day after the 37-year-old Gatti was found dead, police said that his Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, had strangled him with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept.

But police began to back off the accusation about a week later after a coroner's report said Gatti may have killed himself as he was found "suspended and hanged." The autopsy report didn't exclude the possibility he was slain, but said he also could have died in an unexplained accident, besides killing himself.
...
"Nobody believes whatsoever that there's even a 1 percent chance of a suicide. He lived life to the fullest," Ivano Scarpa, a close Gatti family friend, said at the time.

Moms reveal why they gave up their children

Via Jeremy S. Article here. Excerpt:

'Mothers currently retain custody of the children in approximately 70 percent of divorces. But even though that’s the majority, that still leaves a large and growing number of women who do not retain custody.

“The more I talk about it, the more I find that people’s eyes are open to the reality — which is that over 2 million noncustodial moms are in America right now, and it is definitely increasing,” Spicuglia said. “People are recognizing that fathers can be amazing primary caregivers, and we shouldn’t sell men short.”

Spicuglia is one of several women profiled in a Marie Claire magazine article about the growing phenomenon of noncustodial mothers. Joanna Coles, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, said that response to the story has been generally positive.'

Barbara Kay: Don't call it 'domestic' violence

Article here. Excerpt:

'Liberals deliberately conflate domestic violence with honour killing because they feel that making any distinction would "racialize" the crimes, indicting a whole culture. But in order to avoid offending the minority communities in which honour killings occur, they must then "genderize" the practice by force-fitting it into the category of all male-on-female domestic violence.

'Nightmare' for two girls who commit fraud and - shock! go to jail

This story is reported on the Sydney Morning Herald site. Excerpt:

'Efforts were being made today to try to free two British women being held in an overcrowded Rio de Janeiro jail on suspicion of staging a robbery insurance scam, their lawyer told media.
...
Police, suspicious because the women had taken three days to report the alleged theft and still had their passports, accompanied them back to their hostel near Copacabana beach.

There, a search of lockers turned up the mobile telephones and iPod the women said had been stolen.'

So their 'nightmare' is that they tried to commit insurance fraud, got caught out, and are now in the local jail waiting to be sentenced. Poor things...

Our paedophilia hysteria makes life in Britain a misery

Article here. Excerpt:

'This seedy and weird prurience really became noticeable at the start of the decade, when mobs in places like Portsmouth descended on suspected child molesters who had allegedly been placed in the area, whipped up by hysterical tabloid newspapers. What struck me was the site of 8 and 9-year-old girls in boob tubes carrying banners that said “Kill the pidofiles!” Only in Britain – a child dressed like a lap-dancer protesting against paedophilia.

The paedo-mania was an exercise in displacement by the British working-class, who had recently adopted wholesale fatherlessness and a consumer youth culture that glorified in child sexualisation. Mysterious nonces in dirty macs became suitable bogey figures, when sexual abuse of children was far, far more likely to happen in broken homes at the hands of a mother’s boyfriend.'

Megan Fox boycott set for August 4

Off-linked from MSN.com, surprisingly. Asylum.com is one of the participating sites. I don't know if MANN's call for this had anything to do with it, but I don't care. I am just glad it's happening. Excerpt:

'Have you guys heard of this actress, Megan Fox? She's in the "Transformers" movie and she's super-hot and -- oh, you have heard of her already? Maybe that's because we, the media, have been covering her every weird thumb, geek-shunning, supposed bisexuality, Star Wars-T-shirt wearing, and sexy photo taken.

But on August 4, that all changes, as Asylum bands together with the other manly sites of the Web in an Internet-wide media ban on all things Megan Fox. After the jump, see our explanation and find out how you can help.'

Wendy McElroy: 'More on why you should not volunteer with children'

Story here. The Anthony she's speaking about is not me. :-} Excerpt:

'I haven't been able to get Anthony J. Tripoli out of my mind. He is the 69-year-old man I wrote about in a July 19th blog post. He was a volunteer who tutored children one-on-one in reading skills at a public school in Florida. Based on the testimony of an 8-year-old girl and without any supporting evidence whatever, he was given a life sentence for allegedly touching her in an inappropriate -- that is, a sexual -- manner. In reading the news story, I thought the man was probably innocent and a victim of the public/legal hysteria that surrounds the issues of children and sex.

I looked further into the story in the hope of finding reason to believe Tripoli is guilty because I hate, hate, hate the thought of a man's life being ruined because of an act of kindess he rendered to a child. But the more I uncover the more I am convinced of his innocence.'

Trudy Schuett: VAWA becomes a vehicle for wish-list funding

Article here. Excerpt:

'Congress spends approx. 1 billion taxpayer dollars each year with the stated intent of eliminating domestic violence, the largest portion of that amount being the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). They are poised to increase funding even further next year when they vote on a 5 year reauthorization of VAWA. One would think that this much money should have greatly reduced domestic violence by now. But VAWA spending has had little or no effect on reducing domestic violence.
...
For next year's reauthorization, they've formed eighteen committees to dream up their wish-list. It's not possible to know right now just what their demands will be, but recent bills introduced in Congress offer clues to what sort of non-domestic-violence-related things they may ask for.

US Legislators Examine Violence Against Women Act

Article here. Excerpt:

'"So much more is needed. We must strengthen VAWA so that it works for all victims of sexual or domestic violence - whether they live in rural or urban areas, whether they speak English or another language," Karen Tronsgard-Scott says. "Every victim deserves a chance to live a peace-filled life."

But lawmakers are up against protectionists who don't want taxpayer funds benefiting residents who don't have permission to live in the U.S. Others complain about the confidentiality granted through the law. Once an immigrant claims abuse, their quest for legal status through the VaWa act is secret. The accused is not sought out for his side of the story.

Ron Grignol is a critic who says VaWa makes it easy for women to allege abuse, simply to become permanent residents. "Right away you're given legal status. You don't have to go through that immigration interview, you don't have to go through the administrative law judge," he explains. "Your spouse or ex-spouse is not allowed to provide any evidence that he thinks you committed fraud."'

Story update: Cannibal-mother had been diagnosed with 'psychosis'

Story here. Excerpt:

'SAN ANTONIO – The father of a newborn baby who authorities say was mutilated, killed and cannibalized by his mother said Tuesday he wants to see her executed. Scott W. Buchholz told The Associated Press that Otty Sanchez, the mother of 3 1/2-week-old Scotty Wesley Buchholz-Sanchez, seemed fine in the days before the killing, even though they argued.

However, he said she told him she had been diagnosed with postpartum depression and was going to be admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Sanchez's relatives told The San Antonio Express News that she had been diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, which can cause delusional thoughts and hallucinations.

Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the baby's death and could face the death penalty. When authorities found the infant's body Sunday, Sanchez told officers the devil made her do it, police said.'

Jury: Minneapolis woman's rape report false

Story here. Excerpt:

'A defense lawyer on Tuesday won a sentencing delay for a 23-year-old north Minneapolis woman convicted of falsely accusing two Minneapolis police officers of raping her.

After a three-week trial, a jury on Monday convicted Trisha Farkarlun, 23, of making a false report of police misconduct, a gross misdemeanor. She could be sentenced to up to one year in jail and fined $3,000.

Hennepin County District Judge Tanya Bransford delayed sentencing until Aug. 14 so she could receive written memos and respond to the defense motions for acquittal, a new trial and a hearing on potential juror misconduct.'

Detectives will be seeking charges against the woman of filing a false police report.

An interview with the woman Thursday revealed she fabricated the story.

The woman told detectives Wednesday a man approached her apartment and told her that he was there to fix her drywall.

The woman said the alleged suspect then entered the apartment, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

Criminal charges have not yet been filed.'
