Trudy Schuett: VAWA becomes a vehicle for wish-list funding

Article here. Excerpt:

'Congress spends approx. 1 billion taxpayer dollars each year with the stated intent of eliminating domestic violence, the largest portion of that amount being the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). They are poised to increase funding even further next year when they vote on a 5 year reauthorization of VAWA. One would think that this much money should have greatly reduced domestic violence by now. But VAWA spending has had little or no effect on reducing domestic violence.
...
For next year's reauthorization, they've formed eighteen committees to dream up their wish-list. It's not possible to know right now just what their demands will be, but recent bills introduced in Congress offer clues to what sort of non-domestic-violence-related things they may ask for.

US Legislators Examine Violence Against Women Act

Article here. Excerpt:

'"So much more is needed. We must strengthen VAWA so that it works for all victims of sexual or domestic violence - whether they live in rural or urban areas, whether they speak English or another language," Karen Tronsgard-Scott says. "Every victim deserves a chance to live a peace-filled life."

But lawmakers are up against protectionists who don't want taxpayer funds benefiting residents who don't have permission to live in the U.S. Others complain about the confidentiality granted through the law. Once an immigrant claims abuse, their quest for legal status through the VaWa act is secret. The accused is not sought out for his side of the story.

Ron Grignol is a critic who says VaWa makes it easy for women to allege abuse, simply to become permanent residents. "Right away you're given legal status. You don't have to go through that immigration interview, you don't have to go through the administrative law judge," he explains. "Your spouse or ex-spouse is not allowed to provide any evidence that he thinks you committed fraud."'

However, he said she told him she had been diagnosed with postpartum depression and was going to be admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Sanchez's relatives told The San Antonio Express News that she had been diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, which can cause delusional thoughts and hallucinations.

Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the baby's death and could face the death penalty. When authorities found the infant's body Sunday, Sanchez told officers the devil made her do it, police said.'

Canada: Teen lied about sexual assault

Story here.

'A southern Alberta teenager could be charged with public mischief for making a false sexual assault report to police.

RCMP in Strathmore had asked the public for help Monday after a 14-year-old said she had been sexually assaulted by up to five young men around 2 a.m. in an alley behind Strathmore's Co-op liquor store.

Police released a description of three men and a vehicle.

On Thursday, police said the girl had recanted her story. She told officers she made up the story, using details from a verbal encounter she had with two men in the alley.

"The RCMP wish to remind everyone that fictitious claims of criminal offences are not only subject to possible criminal charges, but these stories have a profound effect on the sense of security of the community, negative impact on the reputation of communities, any accused persons and others who are actual victims of crimes," the force said in a release.'

American Thinker: 'The Feminist Way of Interviewing'

Article here. Excerpt:

'Ginsburg agreed to the assertio of unfairness, but laid it to ideology: "There are people in Congress who would criticize severely anyone President Obama nominated."

She then cited Sotomayor's 2001 remark about a "wise Latina" reaching "a better conclusion than a white male" and said, "I thought it was ridiculous for them to make a big deal out of that." Feminists are not concerned when the ox being gored is a white male, any more than a matador thinks twice about putting the blade between the shoulders of a charging bull.

Couples struggle with society's mixed messages

Article here. Excerpt:

'We believe men are in charge and women are suppressed in relationships. But really, women dominate in personal arguments twice as often as men do. Furthermore, men get more stressed and stay stressed longer than women do following an argument. And two-thirds of divorces are filed by women.

Men's chivalrous tendencies to protect women against bullies are working against themselves. Being openly critical of men is gaining acceptance, but being openly critical of women is socially improper.

Women who can't get a man to commit to a relationship are seen as exploited. Men in the same boat aren't a real concern. "'Runaway Bride' was funny; 'Runaway Groom' would be anything but," Driscoll says.

Bottom line, Driscoll and Davis say, is men are being disenfranchised in their families. And unless we turn things around, it will be our children who suffer the most.'
