The Shriver Report released, claims it's a woman's nation

Report here (.pdf file). This report is extremely long -- 438 pages. Admittedly, I skimmed through it but I tried to provide some of the more intriguing excerpts.

“A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything” is work in the best tradition of those ideals. It flips a switch in our culture, sparking a collective acknowledgement of the interdependence of men and women today. With that switch we hope will come changes in the collective mindset of our government, business, faith institutions, our culture, media, and most importantly, men and women. Embracing these new dynamics and sparking new conversations is what “A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything” is all about.

Women's-Only Gyms Rock The Nation

Article here. Excerpt:

'Though Pink Iron has been open to the female gym-going public since April, yesterday marked their official launch as L.A.'s premier women's only, full service health and fitness center created by Holly Holton, a certified personal trainer and globally ranked fitness competitor.

Holton came up with the idea after working for Gold's Gym, realizing that the market was primed for "a fun, motivating, and unique environment where women could sweat without having creepy dudes drool on them!" Sing it, sister!

But what if you don't live in Los Angeles? Actually, there are more than a few women's-only gyms across the country.
...
So if self-consciousness or dude issues keep you from busting a sweat at the gym, check your town for a female-only option. It might be just what the personal trainer ordered.'

Speaker: Masculinity at heart of violence

Article here. Excerpt:

'WATERLOO - Dealing with domestic and community violence is about facing issues of masculinity, according to Harry Brod.

That doesn't mean fighting against men.

"I always position myself as his ally, not his adversary," Brod said during his keynote speech.

Brod, a professor of philosophy and humanities at the University of Northern Iowa, spoke during the morning portion of the Safety, Accountability and Justice in Reducing Domestic and Community Violence conference. The event was Wednesday at Hawkeye Community College.

Brod also served as director of the Iowa Regent Universities Men's Gender Violence Prevention Institute and on the Iowa Governor's Task Force for Responsible Fatherhood.

In his view, masculinity plays a role in nearly all violence committed. School shooters often are bullied and mocked for not being masculine enough - which leads them to lash out - and husbands abuse their partners to assert dominance.'

Teacher resigns after "student encounter"

Story here. Excerpt:

'CLEVELAND, Texas - On Monday, investigators discovered a Cleveland ISD teacher allegedly had sex with a student. By Wednesday night, however, the teacher still wasn't in custody.
...
On Monday night, she called district officials and resigned. Investigators say she admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old male student.

By Wednesday night, Sinclair had not been charged with a crime, but Cleveland police are considering charging her with having inappropriately relations with a student and possibly sexual assault.

A Houston sex offender counselor says society tends to underestimate the harm that can come to teenage boys seduced by a female teacher.

Judy O'Brien says boys are likely to have skewed relationships with women well into adulthood and some will commit sexual crimes.'

Roethlisberger wants damages from accuser

Story here. Excerpt:

'RENO, Nev. -- Ben Roethlisberger is seeking unspecified counter damages from a woman he says falsely accused him of rape in what his lawyer describes as a plan she hatched to seduce the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback in his Lake Tahoe casino-hotel room.

The woman alleged in a civil suit filed in Washoe District Court in July that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her at Harrah's in July 2008 after he lured her there under the false pretense of needing his television repaired.

Roethlisberger's lawyer, John Echeverria, said in a response to the lawsuit filed this week that the woman made up the story because she knew it was against Harrah's policy for employees to visit a guest's room without a work-related purpose.

Her violation of the policy "was a deliberate step in her plan to seduce Mr. Roethlisberger," Echeverria wrote.'

"No equality to be found in domestic violence"

Via Marc A. Op-ed here. This one is worth responding to. It actually admits the near 50/50 data but downplays male victims based on injury rates, misleadingly. I see no comment page but a letter to the editor can be sent to northnews-at-northumberlandnews.com. I sent them a letter which is below the article here. But it might be good to have more. Excerpt:

'Physically and emotionally abused women of Northumberland County are safer today than they were a few years ago.

Northumberland Services for Women's long fundraising campaign to expand its capacity and services culminated with the opening of the third phase of the project, the new administrative offices, on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Blogger replies to "Schrödinger’s Rapist" essay

Essay here. Excerpt:

'Before I get constructive, I have to take a few paragraphs to cite a reasons why this article is insulting towards many men.

First, there’s the “you are a good guy” dialog. This is presented in such a way that suggests Starling has some sort of empathy towards men. Almost immediately, it becomes clear that these words are not written in empathy nearly so much as a failed attempt to placate. There’s also the student/teacher metaphor used in the writing. This sets a dominating and oppressive tone towards men. Feminist should know by now that being oppressive is not effective.

Baltimore City Clerk of Court publicly questions lack of support for male DV victims

Story here. Excerpt:

'The Baltimore City Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team had good news and bad news for criminal justice leaders Wednesday during its annual report, trumpeting a significant drop in homicides but bemoaning slow progress on policy recommendations the team made in past years.

“The number of domestic violence homicides is plummeting,” declared Julie Drake, chief of the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Felony Family Violence Division and vice chair of the team, which is a committee of the city’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
...
Baltimore City Clerk of Court Frank M. Conaway Sr., who often asks pointed questions of the police commissioner, echoed his concern of previous years that the presenters and their offices focused on battered women to the exclusion of male victims.

Canada: Professor stands up for men's rights at U of New Brunswick

Via Marc A.: Article here. Excerpt:

'A new human rights issue was brought to light this past week at UNB: what about men’s rights?

On Thursday, Oct. 8 Dr. Anthony Synnott from Concordia University stood in front of a roomful of students and professors and spoke about his new book Re-Thinking Men: Heroes, Villains and Victims. Synnott sat in the hot seat as he discussed his theories on masculinity and equality for men. He believes that in the quest for women’s rights, men’s rights have been either forgotten or ignored.
...
Synnott takes this further by saying, “Prejudice against ethnic groups is called ‘racism’; prejudice against women, ‘sexism’; and prejudice against men is considered really, really funny.”

Rejected women sue Swedish university

Story here. Excerpt:

'A group of women who are suing a Swedish university for gender discrimination have also reported Sweden’s Equality Ombudsman ... to the Ombudsmen of Justice – JO), charging the agency failed to take up their case.

The women claim they were denied admission into the psychology programme at Lund University in southern Sweden on account of their gender.

They argue that they were passed over in favour of men, who received priority treatment for admission in order to increase the number of men in the programme.

In addition to filing a lawsuit alleging illegal discrimination against the university, the 31 women have also reported the Equality Ombudsman for failing to carry out its responsibilities as the arbiter of discrimination claims in Sweden.
...
The two conclude that, “because in reality DO thinks it’s good to choose students based on gender – having equal numbers of each gender is a more important goal than equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender”.
