Slate: "How to Buck Up the Science Ladies"

Article here. Excerpt:

'Last week, researchers at the University of Colorado published a psych experiment that seems almost too good to be true. They showed that two 15-minute writing exercises, administered to an intro physics class early in the semester, could substantially boost the scores of female students. Even more curious: the exercises had nothing to do with physics. Instead, students were asked to write about things that mattered to them, like creativity or relationships with family and friends. How could a few paragraphs on personal values translate into enduring better mastery of pulleys and frictionless planes?

...Stereotype threat is a universal offender: It can sabotage white men on the basketball court or men more broadly on a test of social sensitivity. Whenever people are made to worry that they might confirm a negative assumption—for instance, that girls can't do math or that white men can't jump—they may be less likely to do their best. Frustratingly, the stereotypes they want so badly to avoid instead may instead become self-fulfilling....

Women in prison: a growing population

Article here. Excerpt:

'...women are the fastest-growing prison population in the state, in the country, and in the world.

Why? It’s hard to say. Overall, the prison population has boomed since the 1980′s, so it only seems natural that the numbers of women would increase as well–but proportionally, women still outnumber men compared to 30 years ago. One common explanation is the increasing participation of women in the narcotics industry, whether as users or dealers. Others contend that women are often arrested as accessories to crimes involving their husbands and boyfriends.
...
As the population of women in prison continues to grow, it’ll be interesting to see how correctional institutions evolve to respond to this population’s needs–will the system become more rehabilitative? More focused on sustaining famiy relationships during incarceration? Will they not change at all? Should they change at all?'

We Need to Stop Excusing Women's Violence

Blog entry here. Excerpt:

'For the past few weeks one of the the stars of MTV's hit show, "Teen Mom," Amber Portwood, has been the focus of a whole lot of media attention for her domestically violent behavior caught on tape towards the father of her toddler child Leah and boyfriend, Gary Shirley.

Every news outlet from CBS to CNN to TMZ has written or spoken about the on-camera verbal and physical assaults that Amber has directed towards Gary. Gary, to his credit, has never physically retaliated.

Although I don't know Gary personally I know thousands of "Gary's" in similar situations. Gary, like other men in these situations who do not hit women or defend themselves against a woman's violence, know the rules of the game i.e. if a woman hits you stand there in take it because if you defend yourself you're going to jail. There is no excuse for abuse, unless it's a woman doing the abusing.'

Child Murder: It Must be the Husband's Fault

On A Voice for Men, here. Excerpt:

'“Ju know, they say eet was the hoosbands fault,” announced the thirty something Mexican immigrant who was cutting my hair that day, two months before 9/11 changed the world. The big story of the moment was not about terrorists or toppled buildings, but about Andrea Yates, the Houston area mother of five that snuffed the life out of all of her children a mere half hour from where I live. And my stylist, using up every word of almost English in her repertoire, was attempting to 'splain to me how the whole mess could rightly be hung on the man.

“Oh, yeah?” I asked, unsurprised at the stupid remark, but too far into the haircut to get up and walk. “Who are they?” I was instantly pissed and made no effort to hide it.

UK ballet teacher admits abducting teen she was accused of seducing

Story here. Excerpt:

'A BRITISH ballet teacher with a budding career in showbusiness was warned today that she faces a possible jail sentence after pleading guilty to abducting a teenage pupil.

Sarah Pirie, 27, was an aspiring dancer, actress and choreographer and had appeared in TV dramas Waterloo Road and Hollyoaks when she met the 15-year-old boy during one of her classes at a dance school.

She was initially accused of having sex with the youngster at a succession of hotels in Manchester and across the UK's North West over a three-month period between March and June last year.

But the dancer learned that she would no longer have to face the five charges of sexual activity with a youngster when she made a brief appearance before Judge Michael Byrne at Preston Crown Court.

Instead she changed her plea to guilty on a single count of abducting the teenager on May 22 last year. She was freed on bail until January 7 when she will be sentenced.'

On YouTube: Men beaten off women's train in India

Here's the video to an earlier post from India about women making men do sit ups because of harassment accusations during a train ride. The harassment claims haven't been substantiated so this could just be the result of men entering the women-only train because of over crowding. Much worse than the sit-ups is footage of police escorting the men off the train at gunpoint while female passengers strike them. I heard about the video after watching 'Countdown' with Keith Olbermann. He played the footage and cracked jokes.

Columnist: 'Sexist' tax cut would benefit Ireland as a whole

Article here. Excerpt:

'The revelation in the news yesterday of an IMF proposal to lower the income tax rate of Irish women returning to the workforce by five percentage points, was greeted with bemusement swiftly followed by derision.

A number of angry men were quick to cry foul, branding the initiative "sexist". One popular daytime radio presenter described it as a "tax cut for the girls" and went so far as to speculate that any additional take-home pay resulting from what he branded a "sexist law" would be spent on "shopping and hair". A secondary, more measured, debate arose between women with children, who tentatively suggested that there might be some merit in a measure that counteracted the prohibitively high cost of childcare in Ireland, and women without children, who felt that they would be disadvantaged.'

India: Women force men to do sit-ups on train

Article here. Excerpt:

'A GROUP of male passengers travelling in a female-only carriage on New Delhi's new metro system were ordered to do sit-ups on the platform by the furious women, according to reports.

At least one carriage is reserved for women on every metro train in the Indian capital, where female residents and tourists have complained about sexual harassment on public transport for decades.

The metro has also become severely congested with the lines expanding into the suburbs over the last year and most regular carriages packed to capacity.

The Times of India said on Saturday police led a crackdown at a station in Gurgaon, a booming satellite development on the outskirts of Delhi, after a series of complaints - and women passengers joined in the action.

"Not only were the unruly commuters made to shell out a fine of 250 rupees ($A5.50), angry women slapped some of them and forced them to do sit-ups,'' the Times reported.'

UK: Shoplifter who mowed down policeman told 'Take 7-week trip-of-a-lifetime before we lock you up'

Story here. Excerpt:

'After mowing down a policeman in an attempt to escape justice, shoplifter Saphhia Da-Silva was expected to face the full wrath of the British legal system.

But instead magistrates have adjourned sentencing – so she can enjoy a pre-booked seven-week holiday to Australia.

Da-Silva was spotted shoplifting at a Gap store and was followed to her car by two police community support officers.
...
Her case had been adjourned for pre-sentence reports, and a sentencing hearing would have likely been held in mid-December.

But the mother-of-two's planned seven-week trip Down Under, on a visa, is from November 28 to January 15 so Ashford magistrates agreed to adjourn the date until January 31.'

'A YOUNG woman told a 14-year-old boy's mother she was driving him to school before taking him to her home and having sex with him, a court heard.

Kimberley Annette Gale, 24, of Hillside, pleaded guilty in the County Court to two counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16.

Her lawyer, Amy Wood, told Judge Sue Pullen her client had had a difficult childhood and the attention of the boy, plus moving back home to live with her mother and stepfather, had made her feel "like she was 16 again".'

Court urged not to jail genital burner

Article here. Excerpt:

'A court has been urged not to jail a woman who burnt her husband to death in what her lawyer has called a momentary lapse of control.

Rajini Narayan was found guilty of manslaughter for dousing her husband, Satish, in petrol and lighting it with a candle at their home at Unley in Adelaide two years ago.

Defence lawyer Lindy Powell said the woman should be sentenced on the basis that she had planned to burn his penis as a minor circumcision after learning he had been having an affair.'
