We Can Raise Boys To Become Good Men By Treating Them Like Girls

Article here. Excerpt:

'When I was a kid in the 1970s, the “tomboy” was queen — or maybe king. Even a non-sporty girl like me was dressed in the unisex uniforms of white-piped track shorts, Keds, and t-shirts, just like my brother. The lesson I learned from my parents, peers, the media, and the passage of Title IX in 1972, was that I had legal right to everything culturally marked as “for boys.”

But the same access to girls’ worlds has still not been granted to boys. Despite the recent media focus on toxic masculinity, boys still feel insistent pressure to be violent, to shut down emotions, to watch porn, and to have sex even when they don’t want or aren’t ready to. They feel pressure to reject anything associated with what’s culturally marked as “feminine” — kindness, vulnerability, love, seeking help, let alone dolls and the color pink — and pressure to look down on girls and women. Boys learn that “girly” is an insult, and they must at all costs distance themselves from it.'

'A bill that would make sexual conduct without affirmative consent a third-degree felony failed in a House committee Monday.

House Bill 78, sponsored by Rep. Angela Romero, did not pass with a 5-6 vote by the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee.

Affirmative consent is a knowing, voluntary, and mutual decision among all participants to engage in sexual activity.

The bill would have also required an offender to register as a sex offender.'

Toxic Femininity: The under-addressed gender calamity

Article here. Excerpt:

'Male hatred stems from the misdirected battle against patriarchal society, which many feminists view as solely a collection of fights against individual men who committed heinous crimes, such as sexual assault. However, a concentrated battle against toxic societal expectations, combined with these individual initiatives, may create a healthier alternative, deterring future misdemeanors. Within this battle is halting the reinforcement of both negative female and male societal expectations. Beginning for many feminists with the awareness and correction of their mindsets caused by a toxic feminine society, a great number of avid feminists would be surprised to know that their version of feminism frequently contributes greatly to patriarchal norms like the objectification of women.

Melinda Gates urges Biden to put women at center of COVID-19 response

Article here. Excerpt:

'Philanthropist Melinda Gates said she believes leaders must put women at the center of their response to COVID-19 in order to address the child care crisis.

“We're seeing women leave the workforce in droves compared to men,” Gates told ABC News. “A lot of it has to do with the types of jobs women are in, but also the caregiving that women do for children and the elderly.”

Women are losing their livelihoods faster, because they are more exposed to hard-hit economic sections. According to a new analysis commissioned by UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme, by 2021, around 435 million women and girls will be living on less than $1.90 a day -- including 47 million pushed into poverty as a result of COVID-19.'

America Has A Boy Crisis

Article here. Excerpt:

'The Brookings Institute recently released a report that showed parents, both liberals and conservatives, are more worried about their sons’ futures than their daughters’. Our boys are not okay. Moms are worried about how this new world we’re living in will treat their boys today and in the decades to come.

I often wonder how things might be different if, 20 years ago, society had listened to the Factual Feminist Christina Hoff Sommers when she warned the public in her book, The War Against Boys, that there was indeed a war against boys and we’re leaving our boys behind to our own detriment. Rather than take her warnings seriously, she was accused of being a “Bootlicker of the Patriarchy” by feminists.

But Sommers was right, and sadly, because society continues to turn a blind eye to the issue, the problem has only gotten worse.

UK: 'Culture of misogyny' could mean men get more lenient sentences - commissioners warn

Article here. Excerpt:

'A "culture of misogyny in the criminal justice system" could lead to men getting away with more lenient sentences, the victims' commissioner and domestic abuse commissioner for England and Wales have said.

In a joint letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel, Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland and Attorney General Michael Ellis, the commissioners have called for an independent review for every domestic homicide.

They are also urging the government to review murder and manslaughter sentences in domestic abuse cases.

In the letter, Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs and Victims' Commissioner Dame Vera Baird QC call for "greater recognition of the devastation caused by domestic homicide" and a "programme of work to address deficiencies across the criminal justice system and statutory services".'

Data Shows Women Make Better Leaders. Who Cares?

Article here. Excerpt:

'The mountain of evidence keeps growing. Women leaders outperform. Especially during a crisis. Companies with more of them do better. Countries led by women are managing the Covid crisis better than their male counterparts. Why aren’t we all celebrating a global human awakening to the miracle of women’s century-long rise this International Women’s Day? Because only half the world is listening. And no, it’s not women vs men. It’s public vs private sector.
...
Companies expect talent to fight for power. That’s what men do. Women don’t. They fight for purpose. That’s why men sit atop the corporate world and women are now reaching the top of the public and non-profit sectors. That’s also why we need more women running businesses. Male dominated companies not only underperform. They are bad for the rest of us (think tech and finance, AI and subprimes).'

If Pepe Le Pew promotes rape culture, what about the date-rape plot in Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming 2 America’?

Article here. Excerpt:

'Except this isn’t what happened. At all. In this movie, we find out that Leslie Jones’ character drugged Akeem and then had sex with him, making it literally date rape. Via Slate:

. . .Akeem was drugged by a woman (played by Leslie Jones) who he and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) invited back with them from the bar—a woman who then proceeded to have sex with the prince and become pregnant with his son. That this scene depicts a pretty clear-cut date rape (Akeem doesn’t remember any of this, except that he encountered a “boar”) while playing it for laughs is one of the movie’s first and most harrowing choices.

And since we spent the entire weekend canceling Pepe Le Pew, shouldn’t the New York Times and Charles M. blow be at least as equally as concerned with an entire movie based on date rape?'

Here Comes the Due Process Rollback

Article here. Excerpt:

'Schools and colleges are closed across much of the U.S., but some in Congress have a different priority for the Department of Education: Ensuring that student due-process protections are weakened.

Miguel Cardona, the department’s newly-confirmed Secretary, hadn’t even been in office a full day before 115 House Democrats sent a letter pressing him to “prioritize replacing Secretary Betsy DeVos ’ final rule” on campus sexual misconduct.
...
The House letter claims the rule “turns back the clock and erodes hard-fought protections and rights for victims with a ‘boys will be boys’ approach to sexual assault on college campuses.” That’s nonsense, and we doubt most signers can name the rule’s relevant provisions.'

How Negative Stereotypes About Boys Affect Their Academics And Health

Article here. Excerpt:

'At stake in this debate is so much more than the toys boys play with. The stereotypes and pressures that boys face threaten their physical and mental health, their ability to navigate their inner lives and interpersonal relationships, and even their academic success.

Consider how boys are doing in school. The average boy lags behind the average girl in reading. Boys are more likely to drop out of high school and less likely to enroll in college. Journalists and activists have been calling attention to this “boy crisis” in education for two decades, attributing it to teaching styles ill-suited to boys and more generally to the assumption, among feminists and educators, that the students most in need of attention and help are girls.
