No winners
OK so if boys and girls both are falling behind now in early reading, what is that telling us? It says this: the schools are failing due to a teacher shortage, among other things. And we are breeding a new generation of semi-literate technogadget addicts with few actual employable skills or aspirations. No winners. Like on a sinking ship- if the crew is trapped below deck and the water is up to their shins while the passengers are also trapped but with water up to their waists, should the passengers complain that the crew has it better? Well they could. And they'd be right. But they ain't seeing "The Big Picture", are they?
Where was this warning when
Where was this warning when schools started focusing on girls? Where is this warning in the many, many areas that schools are still focusing on girls?
The article didn't say that
The article didn't say that girls were falling behind. They're not by any measure that I've seen lately. It said they COULD fall behind if schools try to bring boys' performance up.
In other words; helping girls is good keep doing it. Don't help boys too much because the girls won't be helped as much.
Hypocrisy
I find it interesting that the 'possibility' of girls falling behind is now a priority when boys have been legitemately behind for years. Western society still has done very little to correct the problem.
Sounds like some English feminists are trying to manipulate the education system with bullshit theories simply because there has been an attempt to help boys.
We all know feminists love the current education disparity.
Objective Inquiry?
If you take the time to investigate their web site, they are actually very balanced in promoting literacy for both boys and girls.
They appear to be equally concerned about boys.
I spent a while looking at their links and research posted and frankly did not detect any taint of feminism.
read a novel?
maybe if you could get that da**ed cell phone outta their ear.
i would be interested to know how many (%) have ever read a novel.
and no, romance novels don't count.
I don't doubt it
However, the news article itself seems to only care about the girls.
