Conference to Explore Registry of Sperm, Egg Donors

Article here. The argument seems to be that the registry would be helpful for health reasons (It's For The Children![tm]) and that would override privacy considerations, because no one, least of all the government, would ever consider inappropriate use of this information, and what kind of scum are you not to want your children to able to find you, anyway, sir?!

Seems to me such a registry would have health benefits for the children of recipients of egg and sperm donations, but I am somewhat concerned about privacy. What if you wound up being a DNA parent to 30 - 40 infants, all of whose mothers demand CS? Talk about a Family Court feeding frenzy!

In principal, I think sperm donation is a bad idea - regardless of promises of anonymity, the prospect of being suddenly liable for back CS for one or more children that are only yours in a biological sense is daunting, to say the least. Looks as if men in the UK and Australia are already finding out about how much their privacy is worth in the face of a CS order. I don't want to see it happen here. But if you insist on being a donor, consider the prospect of the children derived from that donation being able to find you and demand a portion of all you have worked for, in exchange for....?

The question every man should ask, before every interaction with a woman (or a sperm bank, for that matter) is "What's in it for me, and what are the risks?"

only God knows the atrocities committed hourly in "family court" using that excuse.

however, many of us here just don't seem to have the faith in government, especially once someone figures how to get a paycheck out of it, that these people want us all to have.

for instance, is it in the best interest of the child for paternity fraud to be allowed?

or, how is it the best interest of any child to not know their biological parents identities?

and how is best interest of the child served for one parent to be chosen primary parent during a divorce, with all the rights and no responsibility for financial support, based solely on the gender of that parent?

and how is the best interest of the child served when women go and get sperm out of a disposed condom and impregnate themselves, solely with the intent of using that child to gain financial support? custody being a given, even for these obviously disturbed women.

in short, when people start talking about the "best interest of the child" in this society, put your wallet in a safe place and feel pity for the children involved.

As far as I know, Paternity Fraud and getting elected to public office are the only two forms of fraud where the criminal has legal power to force one victim to pay while keeping one (or more) victims in her power. Maybe there are some parellels there.

The continuing erosion of legal protections for men who donate sperm is going to kill the entire artificial insemination industry.

What thinking man would even consider selling his sperm today, when twenty years after your act of charity you can get a summons to a court hearing to meet the recipient of your anonymous DNA who now wants access to your assets?

It's also very risky to give sperm away depending upon the nature of the transaction!

One small deposit in the wrong place can lead to a lifetime of pay-outs.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm going to start walking around with a hand over my groin area from now on.

Or maybe I'll just start wearing a codpiece.

Just in case...

Men are so disrespected these days sometimes I literally consider wearing some sort of bullet proof cup myself. I treat my body like a temple. Restricted acess, and whores are not allowed! ^_^ Also, I'm just throwing this out there, but us men should be sure to take extra precaution when disposing of condoms. I wonder what would be good to use to sterilize them to avoid the scenario that daveinga was talking about?
