No part of that comment denigrated African Americans in any way. What I was trying to get at was, you take a city and make some kind of vague, strange comment about it, you'll get any of a number of interpretations back, not necessarily one you'll like.

There was a post further down that likened a "chocolate city" (a 70s, pro-African American expression from the "I'm black and I'm proud" timeline) to an anus. Why not accusations of hatred there?

However, Southern politics does have the stench of racism about it - wasn't it a New Orleans politician who was incredibly thankful that one of the projects flooded, "God accomplished what we could not" or some such thing?

You can see me as racist or whatever - I don't particularly care either way. Being born a white male I'm considered a baby stomper cause of my color and a potential rapist because of my gender. I know what I am, and am secure in what I am, which allows me the occasional potentially misunderstood wry comment.

People who are too quick to jump to label another person a racist is compensating for something, methinks.

If you've never seen PCU, you won't have seen George Clinton grab his genitals at an overly politically correct woman saying "F*ck you very much, lady." That's the kind of thing I was getting towards.

My point was, and you're still not getting it, that when you make a vague statement open to massive interpretation, don't be surprised at what people make of it.

New Orleans is a historic place. It happens to be recovered swamp land. It's famous for jazz. It's famous for good food, debauchery, and easily imitated accents.

It also has a substantial African-American population.

Per our new policy, EevilYoungFlesh and Roy, for using abusive language toward each other, are blocked. Based on the degree of the violation though, Roy is blocked for 3 days while EevilYoungFlesh is blocked for two weeks. Note blocking means a user is placed on moderation-- they may still post to the site but these posts will have to be checked first before appearing. If however during or after the moderation period this behavior persists, further actions will be taken.

To clarify: The rule about this behavior is not that people say what we like or don't like, or whether they say something construable or even identifiable as patently as racist or not, as distasteful as it is, but whether they are using abusive language on one another, quickly getting into bashing matches as distracting from the site, or are clearly here to disrupt the site.

Nasty comments aren't the issue, anthony. The issue is profanity and more generally, "level of discourse". In order for MANN to be productive and useful, name-calling matches filled with profanity can't be allowed to flourish. Sure you wrote some "nasty comments" but on this site, everyone eventually does, and nowhere did you start calling anyone "a$$hole", etc. It's patterns of behavior and the ways people are expressing their disagreement that become not just counterproductive to the cause but turn the site itself into a garbage can in terms of foul language. MANN has had and still has a very high tolerance for posting content (esp. compared to other such sites), but there is a point where some lines have to be drawn for everyone's good. The comment section cannot be allowed to be a cesspool of personal profanity-laced bashings and still serve as a place to actually discuss the stories or any other issues you may want to talk about. There are many other places out there on the web for people to post their unbridled 4-letter-worded insults to one another, but MANN isn't one of them.
