Virginia Tech Collegiate Times editorial: "Men Often Victims of Sexual Assault"

'In a May 2007 study, the Centers for Disease Control found that more than 800,000 males in the United States are raped or physically assaulted by their female partners every year.

The National Coalition of Free Men (NCFM) is expressing concern during domestic violence awareness month this October that this study has been unfairly ignored because of the media's gender stereotyping.

CDC studies show the gravity of IPV for men and women alike. In the year 2004, IPV resulted in 1,544 deaths with 25 percent being men. Updated in 2003, the corporate cost of IPV in the United States was $8.3 million from medical care, mental health services and lost productivity.'

Correction: this is not an "op ed," it's a news item. An op ed is an individual opinion piece (usually opposite page of an editorial, hence "op ed"). This is straight news, which is better for us.

Everytime I've heard the CDC quoted they've said "800,000 men are assaulted by an intimate partner". This one specifically says female partners. Do we know which is the correct citation for the report?

I'm happy with the progress but they got it wrong. First, the May 2007 study was not the one that found 800K men are victims annually. The 800K study was from years ago, I think 2002, called the "Violence Against Women Survey." I don't recall whether that 800K figure was only assualts by women or whether it included same sex. But the May 2007 study did focus on heterosexuals and found 25% of the relationships had violence, half of which was reciprocal, and that women committed 70% of the nonreciprocal violence. The paper confused the two studies, and that's also why, I think, they said "female."

They messed up, and I'd be surprised if they didn't, but it's in the right direction. I wish most other media were at least that sincere.

Men can be raped by women. A false rape accusation is rape and should be prosecuted as such.
