Review of Duke lacrosse case halted

Story here. Excerpt:

'DURHAM - The specter of massive civil lawsuits has stopped the work of a special committee probing the Durham Police Department's handling of the Duke lacrosse case.

The city's liability insurance provider said continued investigation by the committee could provide ammunition for a civil lawsuit by superstar lawyers.

City officials released a statement Monday saying that the committee is in "a holding pattern" until its attorneys meet next week with the counsel hired by the former lacrosse players falsely accused of rape by an escort dancer hired for a team party in March 2006.'

When you were a kid and were proved wrong, did you yell and scream and change the subject until it went away? Yeah, some adults still do that.

This is exactly why nothing ever changes. The city knows full well the cops et al screwed up big time but they call quits to the investigation into it for fear of liability.

Well, just ask the millions of men in prison - you mess up, you pay dearly.

But the city sees it's self differently. They mess up, they cover up. No need for them to pay for their crimes, only the people have to do that.

Plus, admitting that the police are completely fucking incompetent morons would tarnish the hero mantra that started after 9/11 and then the police might actually start to get held to some standard of practice and have a little accountability themselves. God forbid. The police never get it wrong after all (I mean they get it wrong more often then they get it right)

All of these organisations have become far to powerful and far to separated from the general public who put them there in the first place. It is high time we make our tax funded, led by people voted for by the public organizations work for general public tax payers again.

A failure to investigate and solve the problem is unacceptable to the people who put them all in office.

From article:
"I think after a while the city may end up feeling like General Custer at Little Bighorn," councilman Eugene Brown said."

Cry me a river, fuckface! What do you think the three lacrosse players felt like, when up against Duke University, the city, and numerous others?? Maybe David vs. Goliath is more accurate!

These guys are being penalized for having high-power lawyers..when that is what it took in the first place for justice to prevail.

Justice is directly proportional to the amount of money you have in your bank accounts.

The more money you have, the more justice you receive

Along with universal health care, we desperately need UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO LEGAL SERVICES. No fucking 'go through the motions' public defenders. We all need access to legal services of the highest caliber who have the resources to do the investigations that the police couldn't be bothered to do and reveal the facts that uncover the whole story, not just the glimpse the police choose to focus on.

I share your concern with the relationship between money and justice, but hopefully you're not suggesting that attorneys be paid by the government and operate according to “official government standards”.

Government run programs/services inevitably operate according to the wishes of the strongest political forces. Guess who that is when it comes to anything remotely related to gender. (Clue: it's not equalitists)

There’s plenty wrong with the legal system but let’s not assume it couldn’t get worse.
