Female Movie Directors Face "Struggle for Equality"

Excerpt:
"Hollywood is still an old boys' club and boys are bullies.

The ultimate symbol of the film industry is a man, Oscar, clutching a sword and standing on a reel of film because he's defending his turf," said Tom O'Neil, columnist for theenvelope.com Web site. "I think that says it all."

1. Find some way in which men are outdoing women. (Ignore ways in which men are outdoing women to their detriment, such as work-related deaths)
2. Find a few cases where women are doing well in that area.
3. Make the women out to be victims of discrimination as under-acknowledged and other women not in that field as victims of society.
4. Write articles and start threatening lawsuits.
5. Establish a committee and get federal funding; live off of it for the next 20 years.
6. You're done.

If women aren't dominating an area, then it's discrimination and sexism of the patriarchy. If women are dominating an area, it's either celebrated or ignored by the media. Equality is not the goal.

Directors are artists. The end product - the movie - is their vision come to life.

Nearly all of the greatest artists for all of history have been men. Not to say that women are not good artists, it's just that the very best artists in any creative genre, painting, music, sculpture, architecture, film directing, fashion, writing, dance, you name it, are men.

One of the very first areas feminists tried to conquer in their campaign of destruction was the art world - they failed. Creative genius must be a gene on the Y chromosome or something.

If you've got $50 million riding on a project as an executive producer, who are you going to hire, the best you can get or a woman because she's ok but she has a vagina?

The Hollywood system is set up to maximize profits by "giving the people what they want." (Yeah, we're all powerful share-holders in the culture industry...)

Chick directors make chick flics.

Cerebral, emotive, subtle... like watching paint dry.

Sophia Coppela's "Lost in Translation" with Bill Murray (man, he just did an excellent job as comic M.C. at the "Crossroads" blues fest in my home town last week-end), is an excellent, intelligent, nuanced picture.

My young adult daughters have never been able to watch it all the way through. They complain - "ummm dad, nothing is happening in this movie..."

So, if even young college-educated chicks won't sit through a chick flic, what's the point?

If a female director has a brilliant idea for a movie, hollywood producers would fund such a project whether it was a male or female. Its all about $$$$$$$$$$...something Hollywood is very fond of. Paragon is correct: Its about brilliant creativity. The harsh reality for feminists, this brilliance mostly comes from a man.

By the way, why aren't there more reports about the elementary school teaching disparity. Only ten percent are male. While men might be better directors, women aren't better teachers. Whats more important, education or hollywood? Unfortunately, society has overwhelming chose the latter of the two.

I don't know that men are inherently better at this kind of stuff. But "affirmative action" in Hollywood is not the answer.

(anthony) -- "By the way, why aren't there more reports about the elementary school teaching disparity. Only ten percent are male."

I've posted about this ad nauseum...

If you look at the typical male experience from being born through college graduation...

it is a seamless, socially approved, institutionalized MATRIARCHY. (In the Muslim world, this would qualify as gender terrorism.)

Infancy to age 5 = household dominated by Mom. (Or surrogate moms ... aunts, sisters, the lady next door, etc.)

K-12 = elementary and high school dominated by female teachers (gendered authorities).

College/university (if you even make it) = more refined feminist propaganda, ideological correctiness, 58% girls enrolled, pervasive anti-male bias.

Marriage? (The terminal decree?)

Don't even think about it.

Men are being conditioned from birth through death to be domestic servants for the Matriarchy.

Sorry, can't type any more right now...

"Cupcake" (my soulmate) just gave me permission to leave the house without her!

Funny what men will accept as "freedom"

"But it hasn't changed so much that we can quit talking about it," Swicord continued. "I wish we could, and I also wish we could make our movies without people saying, `And she's a woman director.' Here's Julie Delpy doing this wonderful comedy and here's Judd Apatow doing his comedy and no one is saying, `And he's a male director.' ... We may end up being referred to as 'women directors' for a long time

Yeah, well, guess what lady, it isn't MEN causing that kind of distinction to be made. Look around at the other like-gendered people in the world and you'll notice how many of them WANT that special recognition, the +5 points on everything just for having different plumbing. I fully support your desire to end the gender commentary, and think the work, whether it be movies, art, literature, whatever, should be judged on its own merit.

Of course if your work merits the description "crap", remember again, it's not crap because you're a woman, it's crap because you've created crap. Men create crap too, but we don't whine and say 'oh it's just not getting recognition because we're male directors".

One was the broken CAPTCHA validation (admins, here's a suggestion I've used in the past: require CAPTCHA once at login and set a cookie so it doesn't nag us with every comment/post), the other is the fact that the FAQ/privacy policy used to say that access logs (i.e. IP addresses) were deleted weekly. Now there's no mention of how long that information is held, and that worries me. With the continuous pressure that radical feminists place on our politicians to criminalize speech by men (especially in Canada), I have no interest in finding out the hard way that MANN has surrendered my IP address to the enforcement arm of SOW/NOW we call the "police". It's too bad, really - I participated in some very worthwhile discussions here in the past.

The CAPTCHA check only screwed up twice while I was posting this comment (three attempts total), so that seems to have improved a bit.

I'm trying out a few options to anonymize my connection (tor+vidalia+privoxy is my personal favorite so far), so I may be back more frequently once I'm done. Still lurking and reading, though.

As for this thread, first I have to ask: if women are so equal, why is it such a newsworthy accomplishment when they do or achieve something men have done for decades/centuries? Here's a hint: it's NOT because "women are/have been oppressed". According to the textbook definition of oppression, it is men who are oppressed in our society.

Any problem women encounter is automatically deemed to be the result of malfeasance by men. If men have a problem, men are blamed. If women have a problem, men are blamed. This is a pervasive and constant feature of human behavior and anyone who denies it is a misandric fool. Humanity is biologically constructed to be sexist, but that sexism is directed against men. Until that element of human nature evolves, there can be no equality of outcomes without systematic sexism directed against men, and any talk of "equality" in that sense is asinine. Whenever a woman says "I think men and women should be treated equally", I instantly agree and ask her which privileges she's offering to give up first, and when we can expect an apology for thousands of years of misandry.

Talk of "equity" is even more offensive - that's just feminist-speak for wanting the outcomes men get without the responsibilities and penalties men face. These directors and their misandric supporters are very much a part of the "equity" crowd.

I was talking with a woman about this earlier, and I explained to her that what I keep hearing, everywhere I turn, is "I'm a woman, and I'm your equal. Now here is the list of special exceptions, rules and privileges I require, and don't you forget it or I'll sue."

Finally, when female directors stop churning out misandric crap about what terrible beasts men are and what superior, infallible creatures women are (and what victims they are), perhaps they'll be taken as seriously as their male colleagues who did, after all, innovate and develop the art form that is film.

See, this is really another example of a woman complaining from both ends of the same thing. They complain there aren't enough female directors, then they complain because the rare female director is referred to as such. Duh.

If this lady had integrity, she would just blow off the interviews, not even go to them, and would have the philosophy "what is so special about it? Just leave me alone and let me do my job." Women will not be truly respected in their careers until they find it in their interests to maintain a low profile and just blend in. Instead they are all still at the stage where they want to be "pioneers"; it is like they are operating with a childish mindset, like "Look at me, mommy! I'm famous!!".

Why is this stupid femcunt, Female MRA, allowed post feminist headlines to the main page of this site that have nothing to do with our rights movement? Once again, as a feminist, she focuses on some "perceived" injustice - basically conjured lies - that women are misrepresented at Hollywood. I can tell you that I cannot go to the cinema today because all of the releases are made with the female market solely in mind. Misandry is rife in both mainstream films and TV, needless to say.

What would be the purpose of only allowing posts that fit into a rigidly defined mold? Why not allow views that are not necessarily directly related to the male rights deficit in western developed nations? Are we so obsessed with our own cause that we do not even want to hear what others think?

I'd like to think one of the biggest differences between MRAs and feminists is that MRAs are actually concerned with ALL rights deficits not just our genders rights deficits.

Also, remember, this forum has administrators and every post gets reviewed before it goes to the main site. Allowing diverse views is a good thing. Even if you disagree with them, it's still important to understand where they are coming from.

What about "Titanic", the ultimate chick flick of all time? From what I read, there were numerous women who went to see it several times, even when it was still only in theaters.
In one sense, the movie is like a romance novel, i.e. pornography for females.

Men make chick flicks just like the Ne-Yo (a male R&B artist) has written smash hit songs for virtually every top female pop and R&B artist on the charts today - and is currently working on reviving Celine Dion's career by writing songs for her new album which will be produced by Timbaland.

Men can produce art that appeals more to women then men, they have been doing it since the dawn of time. The reverse however happens far more rarely - that a female produces art that appeal more to men then to women.

I realize you wrote "feminist", but the overall message I got from your post is "I hate woman". I would not be so arrogant to suggest anyone her actually hates women but I've becomed concerned lately that some of the posts, even with great content, are more about anger and hate than the actual issues at hand. If some guy stumbles onto this site and checks out some of the posts, what would his reaction be? The posts are rife with great info, but a substantial level of hate exists. Bottom line, I don't post that often partially because my grammar sucks. I just don't want to see this movement as anti-female.

This is an e-mail I recieved from Wendy McElroy. Regardless of what you think of this woman, she is an ally. An ally were losing. I wonder why a link for Mensactivism.org has been removed from both her sites?

" I pretty much walked away from the MR
movement because of its strong theme of real hatred toward women --
even women like me who have never harmed a man and basically come out
for men's rights. I got tired of having my husband defamed, my safety
seriously threatened...and when a close friend who stood up for me had
his real identity 'outed' on Stand Your Ground and, as a consequence,
had to carry a gun for self-protection...I gave up on the movement. I
still believe the law is incredibly biased against men and that there is
a just cause here to be championed. But, you know what? There are
injustices everywhere and I decided to focus on fights where those I was
defending didn't want to beat me and my family/friends to a pulp. After
all, in a very real sense, I have no dog in this fight. I am not
divorced, nor are any of my family members. I have no custody issues. It
was always just about seeing an injustice and speaking out against it
even when I had no vested interest. Now I have a vested interest. I
don't want to endanger those I care for by speaking out for men's
rights. Ironically, it is MRAs who pose that danger."

I wish I knew what to say to you,

I send my best regards,

It has been my impression, through umpteen references that I have heard made to it over the years, that "chick flick" refers to a movie made _for_ women. If you guys are using it for some other meaning, it's one I've never heard before.

The thing is, most 'chick flicks' are created by men.

The thing that seems to be the problem here is not the lack of female oriented content - as there is plenty of that - it is the lack of female vision - in other words directed by women.

There are plenty of successful movies that attracted women vastly more then men. This article is just crying that men are the ones doing the banking off of them because men are writing them, producing them, and directing them. As we all know, most really good directors go on to become producers and even sometimes studio owners (Steven Spielberg owns dreamworks). Plus, as well as actors get paid, directors make more.

The question then becomes, is it discrimination that keeps women from the drivers seat in directing big Hollywood feature films or is it merely that the level of creative genius required to achieve that position occurs naturally more frequently in males then in females?

Probably about a year ago, I noticed the link to ifeminists.com had been removed from this board's main page. I mentioned it and no-one said anything.

The only thing that concerns me is that in her letter, she seems to be lumping _all_ MR groups into the "dangerous" category. That would be close to us lumping all feminist groups into the "ideological" category. Also it's probably not wise to say, "..the thing we despise most, feminists..", since she is a feminist.

Although I really must say at this point that, especially in the U.S., feminism has already served its purpose, whereas the MR groups (the decent ones) are definitely necessary. Feminists may have a little cleanup work to do, but I suspect the movement will go on for at least a couple more decades, as a self-perpetuating kind of thing. After all, feminism itself continues to give women a sense of accomplishment, identity and solidarity, even if without it the remaining problems would gradually solve themselves in due course (at least from the perspective of women).

Also McElroy may be forgetting how radical and hateful "The Feminist Mystique" was, the common use of terms like "chauvinist pigs", and how due to feminism it became so acceptable to hate men. Feminist holding these views were not on the fringes, but instead were mainstream.

It is as if MRA's are being held to a higher standard of decency, than the early feminists (and even the current ones) are. It is like now that it's men's turn to protest, they (men) must "play by the rules", indeed, the rules now laid down by women who have benefited from feminism. As RandomMan has said, "feminists did not get their way by having people over for tea."

The reasons men can write jokes about themselves in order to please women is because men are actually CONCERNED with women. Another reason is men today are so terrorized of women--even though most don't know it--that they feel they must degrade other men in order to get into the woman's good graces. Men on the other hand are seen as something that must be used, molded, or discarded by women. Look throughout history men have ALWAYS taken up for women. How many times do you see women as a whole taking up for men?

Women have been concerned with one thing and one thing only since the dawn of time. Their own welfare. Men are expendable to the majority of women only a few brave women have broken this misandric mold.*E-Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/No_Feminazis/

She lumps all men that disagree with feminism into one group and claim that they want to "beat her to a pulp"(i.e. Domestic Violence against Women), she received "hateful e-mails" that bother her(i.e. The feminist claim of psychological abuse) and that her friends must carry guns now to "protect themselves" from MEN(i.e. Women are being battered by men so they should be able to murder men in "self defense". I call this the "Mary Winkler" excuse). It's the same bullshit being slipped in as "victimology." Except now Wendy is claiming she is a "victim" of Men's Rights Activists. That's the tactic they ALWAYS use. Nothing about this is new. Fuck Wendy.

This woman is a feminist--which is a hate movement--first and foremost. At the core she believes in the same ideology that all man haters do and uses the bit of influence she has to manipulate men into turning against one another as women have always done throughout history. To make a long story short; who cares what she thinks or says? A feminists'--or should I say IFEMINISTS(What bullshit)--opinion never mattered to me either way. I never liked her phony ass anyway.

The article seems to paint that fact as discrimination against women - the Hollywood "Old Boys Club"

But is it? Or could it be a result of other factors, such as perhaps men being more naturally gifted on average artistically and creatively then women?

I mean, when was it that you saw and action movie that drew in hundreds of millions of dollars from men written and directed by a woman? It has never happened, and likely never will.

But, as we already know, pretty much all those tear jerking, heart wrenching chick flicks that draw in the females are written, produced, and directed by men.

Or, when was the last time you heard a song that appealed more to men then women written by a woman. Evenescence for example. Their 'Fallen' album was a HUGE smash hit and appealed broadly to both males and females which was unusual for a female led band. But that album was mostly written and produced by Ben Moody who left the band after that album. Evenecence took years to make a follow up album, written mostly by Amy Lee (the lead singer) and it went pretty much nowhere with one hit single that appealed to teen girl angst and that was it.

Men seem to be able to see from broader perspectives and get in tune better with what an audience wants no matter who the audience is. Men can do funny, scary, action packed, thoughtful, suspenseful, insightful, heart wrenching, heart warming, soul searching, you name it. But women only seem to produce a couple brands of art for the most part (there are of course exceptions like J.k. Rowling who's books appeal in great numbers to young boys as well as young girls) - they just seem to have a more narrow scope.

I'd be thrilled if a woman came along and wrote a really good action novel that turned into a block buster that was able to stay true to the source material and still be a hit. I'd love it if the next great suspense or thriller were directed by a woman - but unfortunately the male audience those movies attract are just not going to find the spider in the corner of the ceiling, or the mouse munching on the dogs food all that terrifying.

Or if the next real heart warmer got directed by a woman that did not deal with her struggle to come to terms with her period. Like Mr Reality said - and it's not often I agree with him but this time I do - women tend to produce art that is focused squarely on themselves. A male will produce a heart warming movie (chick flick) that will involve some HUMAN problem like cancer, poverty, tragic death of a family member and the families struggle to stay together etc... Women will write all about things that affect women. Weight, body image, menstruation and pregnancy, shopping, how she's a tom boy and perfectly accepted by her mostly male peers but that's still not ok because now she's a teen girl and wants to fuck them but their not interested because they see her as one of the guys. Shit like that draws in women who can relate but overall has a narrow focus that will be quickly forgotten because it's to mundane, everyday, and to specific to really connect with many people.

A man will write a song, or a book, or a play, or a movie, about heartbreak. A universal theme anyone can relate to. He won't go into much detail about circumstances, just quickly set up a scene and move on. He'll concentrate on how having your heart broken feels. The pain and suffering and the struggle to reconnect with people and let love in again. Everyone can relate because regardless of the circumstances in each audience members life the feeling is what resonates universally and the feeling was at the center of the narrative.

A woman will write a song about her ex boyfriend Chad with the dirty socks, but really cool shoes, and scruffy face who worked in the construction industry framing houses, drives a blue Toyota truck, but wouldn't buy her a one of those new Pontiac convertibles the cheep bastard, but didn't have that construction worker gut or anything, and cheated on her with her dietitian, and wasn't really that good in bed now that she thinks about it after the fact anyway, and like eww he wasn't circumcised, but she still wants him back because she can't have him any more and what an ass he is for leaving her...and oh what a bitch her dietitian is and she's so ugly anyway, just really skinny cause the bitch starves herself. Then she'll cry to show she's sad. Then she'll bitch some more. The feelings get lost in the extraneous circumstances that she just has to add.
