NYC Teacher accused of raping student

Yes that's right. Raping. R-A-P-I-N-G. Not "abusing", not "contributing to the sexual experience of a minor", not "making happy time with little Timmy", or one of the other ridiculous charges that come up when it's a female perpetrator. Article here. Excerpt:

"Marcia Amsterdam, 30, was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, according to a statement released by the special commissioner of investigation for the New York City School District"

I feel my comment was a little over the top, I want to make it clear I'm not "celebrating" the fact that his happened to the kid. If anything I hope the fact that the prosecuters are using the "R" word means the kid might get the help and support he needs without the "he was 13! he knew what he was doing!" crowd coming out of the woodwork. I'm sure the same crowd cheers when Dateline knabs a pedophile after the "15 year old girl" entices him and clearly indicates the fictional girl "knew what she was doing", yet dismisses the rape of young males as nothing.

However, this is not the first time a woman has been charged with rape only to later have the charges plead down to a sexual offense. In all likelihood this woman will plead out of second-degree rape and end up with some misdemeanor count of inappropriate conduct.

Maybe rape is not appropriate and men need an equivalent word that refers to engulfment of the males sexual organ by the female sexual organ.

Since rape traditionally mean penetration of a vagina by a penis - these days it means whatever the heck the woman who says she was raped says it is - maybe we need a word that is as potent as rape but refers instead to the forced engulfment of a penis by a vagina.

Of course that would take a massive public awareness campaign to build the credibility of the word and indoctrinated the knee jerk disgusted into righteous vengeance reaction that the word rape creates.

It might be worth it though since there are still many people who simply do not believe a male can be raped because they view rape as exclusively the violation of the female sexual organs.

Interesting task, Paragon... you're right: dictionary.com lists the first definition as:

rape
1. the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.

Even this variation is problematic (though not all dictionaries are so specific):

statutory rape
sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of consent, which age varies in different states.

"Molestation" still seems like the best synonym.

Where's an etymologist when you need one?
