Israel: Mother wins dead son sperm case

The lawyer of an Israeli couple who won the right to use their dead son's sperm to inseminate a woman he never met says the case is a boost for family rights.

Irit Rosenblum told the BBC the landmark ruling meant family lines could continue even without the written consent of the male prior to death.

The dead man, soldier Keivin Cohen, was killed in the Gaza Strip in 2002.

A court ruled in favour of his parents who had the sperm extracted after his death, although he had not left a will.

"The drama is international, that mankind is able to continue after [a man's] death and his family can raise a new generation while he is no longer here," Ms Rosenblum said.

So I guess the same standard applies to women and their eggs, too?

This is beyond disgusting. As I understand it, a person's remains have to be respected unless they give explicit, legal instruction that they can be used for non-necessary (necessary-- eg: autopsy in cases of suspected murder, etc.) things; otherwise they have to be cremated or buried. This seems to me to be a pretty universal standard. But is it that there is this exception now, at least in one part of the world, that a man's body can be plundered for its zygotes without his explicit permission, just so that his parents can have grandchildren??

Sick. Just sick.

If this is not some damned urban legend then it is totally weird! Next they will probably sue him for child support and win!

I could easily see this expanded to include the right of girlfriends to harvest sperm from deceased boyfriends.

That is a terrifying thought as that could mean it would become easier to some women to simply hunt and kill the richest man they could find and after his death (when he can no longer testify) claim that she was his girlfriend and therefore has the right to harvest his corpse for sperm and harvest his estate for child support.

Anyone who believes women are to innocent to do that or simply incapable of such unimaginable horror as killing a man to bear his offspring to ensure that they achieve the financial life style they feel they deserve is willfully ignorant of female mature and the depths of depravity that women are capable of.

This ruling could be the seed for some very disgusting laws to grow from.
