Wendy McElroy: Confronting Male Suicide
Submitted by anthony on Wed, 2006-09-27 11:48
Wendy McElroy exposes aspects of male suicide that receives virtually no national attention. She also mentions child custody hearings and the tragic effect it has on men: "As far as the [divorced] man is concerned, he has lost his marriage and lost his children and that can lead to depression and suicide," Kposow advises."
"If a similar rise in female suicides was occurring, a public crusade would demand a remedy. Yet the extraordinarily high rate of male suicide is rarely discussed."

What are the current stats on suicide by divorced Fathers?
I recall hearing, or reading somewhere, that suicides by recently divorced Fathers, or maybe it was just divorced Fathers, was 10 times higher than the normal rate of suicide by men. Does anybody have any info on that???
I found this:
http://www.fathersforlife.org/US_suicide_deaths.htm
"...more American boys and men died during and on account of the War of the Sexes than died in all military conflicts in which the USA were involved during the 20th century."
It is time for American men (and women) to rise up off their knees and get very, very angry at what gender feminism has done to the males of America! All women's studies programs on college campuses would be a great place to start.
DEFUND WOMEN'S STUDIES!
Can anyone read "MEN DIE," contained within the words WOMEN'S STUDIES???
A good start
Of course as Wendy points out, divorce is only one cause. Discrimination in general that men face might be as big a factor or larger. Men face such intense social pressure to be top performers and top earners and always apply different rules aroud females then when in the company of other men. Men get slapped in the face every single day with countless examples of discrimination based on sex. Granted most men are not even aware of it, but I find it hard to believe that it does not take an unconsious toll on every man.
As some one who has lived through my father commiting suicide (an he was married to my mother and they had by most accounts a very good life and were financially very well off)I know that it is also other factors that lead men to commit suicide besides marital breakdown. I would not want the cause to be championed around only that one issue as it would still leave countless men without options.
Also, the criminal justice system is becomming (or maybe already is) as perverse a mochary of justice as the family courts and of course this affects almost exclusively men. With the modern day witch hunts in full force with the "war on Drugs" and the "war on sex (if our a man)" many thousands of men are being sacraficed to feed the justice machine and are killing themselves because once caught in the system there is no way out guilty or innocent.
Then there's boys in school, who get pills instead of help. Who get told they are the reason the girls live in fear. That they re responsable for every act of bullying brought on them, and countless other negative messages and unfair treatments they must endure daily. These boys grow up to be men who kill themselves or others because no one ever gave a crap about their needs.
All, I am saying here is that yes of course divorce and the family breakdown is a large factor, but there are also other factors that are just as large that get even less attention and need just as desperately to be changed in order to curtail the tragity that is unfolding daily before all of our eyes.
What a Difference Five Years Makes!
Ms. McElroy's piece was originally published in 2001.
Now you can't get on the highways of America without seeing giant billboards expressing outrage about the men's suicide epidemic.
Oh, sorry... (I was speeding; blurry billboards can be confusing)...
At legal speed, I guess actually those were billboards about stamping out violence against women.
But I see a bumper sticker that reads -"Save the Males!"
Oh crap. Make that "Whales."
I need a new eyeglasses prescription.
I keep seeing evidence of an MRA media impact where none exists.
Myopia?
The billboards are coming
I have some inside info that you will see info on billboards about MRA issues soon - here at Mensactivism. Sorry, it'll just be California - the misandry capitol of the world.
That Would Be GREAT!
Go for it!
I wonder if there are any
I wonder if there are any other points in history where the so called privileged group was the group that is less healthy, the majority of homeless, the least educated, most suicidal, the group that receives the least social funding and the least protection under law, this is the privileged class? Oh wait that’s ridiculous, that only happens in herstory books.
It’s mind boggling that the men’s movement is not bigger than it is.
