Ireland to Establish ‘Women-Only’ College Teaching Positions

Article here. Excerpt:

'In an op-ed for the Irish Independent, Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor writes that in order to “accelerate” gender equality in Irish Higher Education Institutions, she is creating “female-only professorial posts within our universities and institutes of technologies.”

These “radical changes” are necessary, Ms. Mitchell O’Connor insists, to ensure a more equal playing field.

Many women, “who are as capable and efficient as their male peers,” Mitchell O’Connor writes, “still work in an environment where their gender holds them back. Let’s call it what it is: gender inequality.”

Anticipating some “minor backlash,” Ms. Mitchell O’Connor argues that the move does not discriminate against men but simply addresses the “paltry proportion” of women in senior third-level positions.'

The basic difference between men and women when it comes to work is that men have an obligation to work while women have an option to work. Women have at least two other alternatives to work: get a man to support her or go on welfare. These two alternatives are rarely available to men, so most men work.

A lot of women who do work decide after years to exercise one of their other options, such as staying home and having kids. Women are neither obligated to provide direct care to their children--creating the option to work--nor are they obligated to support those kids financially--which means they can quit working if they wish.

A lot of couples create lifestyles based on two incomes, but at some point the wife decides to quit working, which usually means the husband must work more to pay for the lifestyle the wife still wants, as opposed to scaling back their lifestyle in accordance with their lower income.

Men, however, find they must work, whatever their situation. Until that changes, men will always pay more attention to their careers than women. And it won't change, but women like options, not obligations.

Well said, el cid.

What it really comes down to is that men will starve if they expect someone else to pick up the slack for them; women will always be fed if this is the case.

It's like comparing two people climbing a rope, when one of the ropes is set on fire. Who is going to reach the top first? Guess.
