A Bid for Guns on Campuses to Deter Rape

Article here. "Weapons are an instrument of ill omen, and not the instruments of the superior man, until he has no choice but to employ them." - Lao Tzu.

So packs of rapist men are running wild all over college campuses, justifying a movement supporting female students keeping loaded guns in their rooms or maybe start packin' to keep the gangs of rabid drunken men that predate campuses openly looking for victims to catch off-guard from raping them in broad daylight? Bizarre. Excerpt:

'As gun rights advocates push to legalize firearms on college campuses, an argument is taking shape: Arming female students will help reduce sexual assaults.

Support for so-called campus carry laws had been hard to muster despite efforts by proponents to argue that armed students and faculty members could prevent mass shootings like the one at Virginia Tech in 2007. The carrying of concealed firearms on college campuses is banned in 41 states by law or by university policy. Carrying guns openly is generally not permitted.

But this year, lawmakers in 10 states who are pushing bills that would permit the carrying of firearms on campus are hoping that the national spotlight on sexual assault will help them win passage of their measures.

“If you’ve got a person that’s raped because you wouldn’t let them carry a firearm to defend themselves, I think you’re responsible,” State RepresentativeDennis K. Baxley of Florida said during debate in a House subcommittee last month. The bill passed.'

I'm what I call a mild guns rights advocate (I fully support the 2nd amendment, but I do think we need precautions) Guns in our house has been a source of contention with my husband as he collects weapons, but we have come to an agreement. He can have as many guns in the house as he wants, but no bullets.

Anyway, the thought of arming college students is a terrible idea. Students are known for drinking, high risk behavior and bad decisions. I think it is obvious to MRAs that guns would do nothing to solve college "rape"

And in the event of a mass shooting...your best bet is to run and try to get away, if that's not possible then hide, even if you are armed. Many school shootings are well planned and the shooter is wearing protection. He would come right for you if he saw you shooting, it also causes confusion to law enforcement or vigilantes/bystanders who would likely mistake you for a bad guy.

BTW - the comments from some of the politicians seem sensationalized.
