"Let child support go to kids, not government"
Editorial here. It urges that child support go to the kids instead of to the government. Gosh, what a novel idea. I'm no fan of the current child support system, but at the very least the money should go to the kids, not some bureaucrat. Excerpt:
'It may come as a surprise to some, but that isn't the case in Colorado now. The child support money goes into the greater government maw — not to the typical mom getting Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) who is raising kids alone.
...
First, it would directly increase the meager household income for these single-parent families. These are the poorest of the state's poor families.
Second, it would help strengthen ties between the kids and their biological parents.
Non-custodial parents would have an additional incentive to pay child support if they knew it would go directly to their children and not into a big, amorphous government pot.
Third, there is a question of fairness. If a father is paying child support, the child should benefit. It's that simple.'

Even so, money's going to the "custodial parent", not the kid
This is not progress in terms of "NCPs" (aka "fathers") seeing their money spent well. At the moment, Colorado is essentially laying an extra tax on men with actual or purported children who've been divorced. Now the bill's sponsors want CO's laws more like other states' laws, which allow the gov't to lay this same tax on "the NCP" and turn around and give it to "the CP", keeping part of it as a service fee. No suggestion that the whole idea of child support payments be required of "the NCP" as a matter of course is wrong is even being mentioned. And yet, it is. Given that it was mom's CHOICE to bring the kid(s) to term, the burden of proof should be on her to show why the father/her husband/the *purported* father/etc. has any moral obligation to pay her anything after they're splitsville.
Radical idea? Well sure, it's a MISOGYNIST radical MRA web site here... well, at least according to the SPLC, though I dunno if that's saying much.
The state should also require
The state should also require mom to spend the money on the kids. Fat chance that will ever happen.
I suggested this for posting because back when I paid child support, it bugged me that my money went to the state instead of to my kids. If I was going to be threatened with jail if I didn't pay, I at least wanted the money to go to my kids--not the state. Allowing the state to keep the money made child support a tax disguised as helping the kids. And lacking the money to pay this tax was a felony.
Even with this change, the system is still a bad system and the slave is still a slave.
