UK: Sheilas’ Wheels unveils PinkZones concept – roads for women only

The insurer Sheilas' Wheels in the UK wants women-only roads, called "PinkZones". Apparently male drivers in the UK are creating an unsafe environment for female drivers. I question their statistics as to who is creating the unsafe environment in the UK overall. It says nothing of the extra number of miles (or kilometers) that men drive, who causes the accidents, or how men may be more likely to be convicted of an offense in a biased court system.

At first I thought it was a hoax web site. But no, they're serious, though not enough to mention it on the company web site perhaps because they'll still sell policies to men -- after all, money's money and who doesn't like money? I suspect they know deep down that if potential male customers see something so ludicrous being touted by this company, they'll happily look elsewhere for coverage.

I suspect also that the whole thing's a stunt to bring in more business. But the fact that suggesting such an idea is even believed to be likely to increase their customer base is telling in itself. Imagine a proposal from some company or group saying that since whites are in greater danger for X reason of injury in car accidents than any other ethnic group, there ought to be special "white zones" where only white drivers are allowed to drive? If an insurance company put this idea forward even "just" as a PR stunt, what do you suppose the reaction to it would be? Would people not cancel their policies en masse in objection?

I do believe it's time to release the legion, yes? Contact these a$$holes regardless of whether you live in the UK or are a customer and tell them they suck, and why. Well, I encourage you to be far more civil than "You people suck!", if only because being nasty toward them, even if they deserve it, only gives them cause to avoid considering their own suckiness and instead cry foul over the fact that some nasty, beastly MRA has been mean to them and claim victimhood (feminists and their fellow-travelers are good at this). Just plain telling it like it is to them and how they've earned a permanent buyer's red card from you and gee, BTW, also saying how their marketing exclusively to women while rather coyly also selling policies to men (possibly because the law requires them to, not sure) and yet championing segregated car lanes just plain makes you want to vomit yet further. Now that wording, yeah, fits for me just fine. "Your entire business model and philosophy not only would be welcome in places where gender segregation laws are S.O.P. (e.g.: the Middle East, with all the discrimination such entails) but it also Makes.Me.Want.To.Vomit. Operations like yours belong in the dustbin of discriminatory history and I look forward to seeing it go out of business." Feel free to copy and paste. :)

Contact info here. Note their parent company is esure. Letting their daddy know how you feel about his naughty child isn't a bad idea and should he stand in support of their naughtiness, likewise feel free to cancel any business you have with any esure company and tell them why. Money doesn't talk, as I've said before, it screams.

The comment claiming that men in the UK are four times likelier than women to get charged for a driving violation made me laugh.

They forget that in Britain, the justice system is literally afraid the universe will crumble if a woman ever sees punishment for a crime. Thus, I think that is a moot point, as are all of their arguments in favour of this. Another example is how they don't cite the likelihood of each gender getting into an accident per miles driven (as Matt aptly pointed out).

I think the thing that really makes their sexism show is the fact that they are only for "women-only" lanes. If they also supported "men-only" areas that would be okay, but they want women to be able to use whatever roads they choose, while men can only use some roads, and ones they still have to share with women. How is that even remotely fair? Wouldn't having access to all of the infrastructure in the city (almost exclusively built by men btw), be an unfair advantage? I sincerely hope the gender equality commission stops this dead in its tracks.

I looked into the man vs woman driving stats one time and found that men have fewer accidents per mile than women. Women, however, have fewer accidents overall because, well, they drive fewer miles. For example, a soccer mom drives very few miles compared to a trucker--and truckers are overwhelmingly men. A trucker drives more miles and also drives in more hazardous conditions and traffic. And he is also under pressure due to modern logistics to deliver his load "just in time." All these factors increase the likelihood of something going wrong. But with all these factors, per mile men are still safer drivers.

Also, my own experience is that men are expected to drive in more dangerous situations. For example, when I was married, I was the designed "blizzard" driver. If the conditions were bad, I was the one who drove--not my wife.

Stats show men receive 75% of traffic tickets. Is that because men violate the laws more often or because the police give more tickets to men and more warnings to women? I suspect it's the latter. A cop who stops a pretty woman will let her off with a warning. This costs men because tickets raise insurance rates.

The irony here is that creating pink zones won't make driving safer for women. Women aren't inherently safer drivers than men. They just drive less than men.

Pink --> grey : No extra penalty for lane-crosser (i.e., woman)
Grey --> pink : Extra penalty for lane-crosser (i.e., man)

Undoubtedly that'd be part of the equation, eventually. If the gov't can find a way to increase penal fines on *someone* to collect more revenue, they will. Not much different from red light camera tickets, but at least those don't discriminate.

This California study explains a lot. Compare the first two figures (accident rate by age/sex) with the third (which accounts for miles driven):
