Scotland: Women-only Cabinet event to debate independence
Article here. Excerpt:
'The event, which will bring together women from organisations across the country, takes place on June 9, which also marks 100 days to go until the historic vote.
It comes as Scottish ministers Angela Constance and Shona Robison become full Scottish Cabinet members, joining Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop.
The event will look at issues such as gender equality, female representation on boards, the improvement of childcare and employment law, and issues of the economy and social justice.
...
“We are expanding child care to 600 hours from August this year for all three and four-year-olds and the most vulnerable two-year-olds. Scottish female employment rate is now the highest of any UK nation, and the inactivity rate is the lowest. The Scottish Government also wants to see women make up at least 40% of public and private boards in Scotland.
“However, there is still much work to do and I am clear that the Scottish Government must continue to lead by example.'

Allow me to paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr.
Original:
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Mine:
"One day I hope people will be judged not by the contents of their pants but whether or not they can actually, for example, help a guide company to do better in the marketplace, carry inhalation and burn victims from burning buildings on their own, develop new inventions and improve upon existing ones, and not by default be considered more fit parents, all without using gender-based generalizations and stereotypes to defend their sexist bigotry."
So King was more succinct. Yeah, I get that. I'm not known for my brevity but when there's so much bull$hit to call foul on, it's hard to know when to stop. =)
Notice they have to expand
Notice they have to expand "free" childcare to get women into the workforce. "Free" childcare is a form of welfare. This is more institutionalizing the raising of children, and inhibits the necessity of the family to work as a unit. It decreases the need for a committed union (such as marriage), and the need for parents to figure out childcare for themselves. If this were to occur in the United States, the daycare would become part of the public school system, and expand the teacher' union, promote feminist politics (teacher's unions are usually the largest political power in each state). I assume these governments daycare's in Scotland will be unionized.
So if the average working women with 3 kids earns $20 per hour, the government probably has to pay out $15 per hour in "free" daycare so that she can work. Child care is a real issue - someone has to raise the kids, I would just rather see it done between the two parents, without government involvement.
Of course I don't support the demand for female quotas either.
