Canada: Mother asks judge to jail babysitter who molested daughter
Story here. Only by careful reading will it be clear the babysitter was female. These lines show it: "She had pleaded not guilty and said the girl invented the story." and "...said the babysitter “broke a strong bond between a mother and daughter.”" Makes sense as it was a female babysitter. Excerpt:
'The mother of a young girl sexually assaulted by her babysitter told an Ottawa court Monday that the assault has condemned her daughter to a life of struggle.
The 27-year-old babysitter was convicted of the 2009 assault in October and will be sentenced next month.
According to evidence, the babysitter performed oral sex on the girl, who was five years old at the time of the offence.
She had pleaded not guilty and said the girl invented the story.
Justice Catherine Kehoe rejected the babysitter’s version of events, which she said was “full of inconsistencies that were unexplained and made no sense. It is obvious (the babysitter) had lied so often that she could not keep track of what she had said. I find that (the babysitter) will lie when it suits her to get herself out of trouble.”'
Sadly:
'The child, now 10, is in the care of the Children’s Aid Society in what her mother describes as an “open adoption.”
Her mother told the court she is allowed to see her twice a year.'

Limited visits by mother?
Why? Maybe Canadian law sees things differently but if the mother wasn't involved in the crime, why has she effectively lost custody of her daughter (or did she?)? Did she voluntarily do an open adoption or was it imposed on her by the state for some reason and if so, why? Sorry, not knowledgeable about how this kind of thing may work in Canada.
I noted the babysitter-pedophile's name was not mentioned in the item but perhaps this is to make sure no one can figure out who the mother and daughter are.
my guess is this is not the first or only incident...
If you calculate the dates, it sounds like mother was a teen mom, and then there is this from the article:
"When the girl’s mother heard about the assault, she confronted the babysitter at her house and the two got into a physical fight that resulted in three years’ probation for the mother for assault, uttering threats and a weapons charge related to possession of a knife."
I would guess that the mother has little education, trouble making good decisions, hard time providing for her daughter, etc. It sounds like some agency has (thankfully) been able to talk the mother into an open adoption for the child. There might be a history of poor choices by the mother that increased the risk of the child being abused by others or in harm's way.
