'International Men's Day is a touch ironic, isn't it chaps?'

'My first thought when I heard that there was an International Men’s Day was to sigh and roll my eyes. It was only a matter of time. The reaction when people from an oppressed group set up an event or day to celebrate the achievements that have been made despite this, and to inspire people to continue to tackle inequality then this is the result.

The theme for this year’s International Men’s Day is ‘Keeping Men and Boys Safe’ focusing on five key challenges:

  1. Keeping Men And Boys Safe By Tackling Male Suicide
  2. Keeping Boys Safe So They Can Become Tomorrow’s Role Models
  3. Tackling Our Tolerance Of Violence Against Men And Boys
  4. Boosting Men’s Life Expectancy By Keeping Men And Boys Safe From Avoidable Illness And Death
  5. Keeping Men And Boys Safe By Promoting Fathers And Male Role Models.

I am not against any of these at all. In fact, I think that this is a great idea. I have a son and I want him to be safe. But I do believe that the reasons surrounding these problems that are being highlighted are due to the patriarchal society that we live in.

... I look forward to seeing men marching through the streets demanding that their pay packets be reduced to match ours and that they be allowed to have their pay reduced and stopped when they have a child.
