'Americans Prefer Male Bosses (Fun Fact: Women Are Better Managers)'

Article here. Excerpt:

'Even though the evidence is piling up that women tend to be better managers, a larger share of Americans continue to say they'd rather be managed by men, according to a new Gallup poll.

The poll, published Monday, found than one-third of Americans say they’d prefer a male boss, while about 23 percent say they’d prefer a female manager. (Among Republicans, that gap is even larger, with 40 percent preferring a male boss, and only 16 percent a female one.)

The preference for men may be explained in part by the fact that workers are less likely to encounter female managers; 54 percent of workers have a male boss, while just 30 percent say they work for a woman, according to Gallup.

That's a problem, especially since women tend to be better at the management styles that get the most out of workers.'

Your article might be more believable if the article you linked to as evidence actually had a bibliography and listed the studies it is refering to. I'm not convinced. You can't simply make assertions without backing them up with reputable sources. If you tried to hand this in as an assignment to one of my 100 level English classes, you would have gotten an F.

Women are better managers? Oh yeah, I forgot in our hyper PC society possession of a vagina makes you better at everything apparently...

The HuffPo is rivaled only by the NY Times and Time magazine* for these kind of frothing, slobbering articles. It actually makes me crack a smile as I turn the page (or click the link) to something more worthy of my attention, they're so ridiculous.

* Both headed for the dustbin of history, and good riddance, though it is a shame these once-respectable publications have become such dreck lo these past 25 years.

I still don't see how anything in the article proves women are better managers (I clicked on many of the links). I see something about asking employees and women being better at fostering creativity and interpersonal relationships, but the goal of business is not to be the most creative or most liked, it's to be the most successful. In business this is generally measured by profit; and more profits usually translate to better pay and better perks, and everyone is happy when the pay and perks are good.

As soon as someone informs me that businesses which are managed by women are more successful compared to businesses which are managed by men, as proven by profits, longevity and getting through tough times, then I will take the claim seriously.

While creativity and strong personal relationships can contribute to successful businesses, there needs to be a balance with other forces such as focus, commitment and the ability to NOT get too personal. Usually a business which has a marketable service or product and has managers with a balance of these traits will be profitable
