Background/overview on genetics and genetic studies in common disease.
2. How is one's risk of prostate cancer currently predicted?
Prediction of prostate cancer - emphasis on utility of family history
3. Can genetics be used to improve prostate cancer prediction?
iCOGs study, genetic correction of PSA values
4. How does genomic analysis of tumor inform treatment? (briefly)
Genetic sequencing of tumors; Biomarker-based (non-DNA) diagnostics
(Dr. Moul, originally scheduled as a speaker, will be rescheduled for early 2014.)
Speakers:
1. Daniel Lieber, PhD, is a graduate of Harvard University’s Systems Biology PhD program. He worked in Vamsi Mootha’s laboratory, where his thesis was entitled: “Computational and Experimental Approaches for Evaluating the Genetic Basis of Mitochondrial Disorders.” He was selected for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in 2010. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with an AB in Molecular Biology and a certificate in Finance. He is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics and a student member of the American Academy of Neurology.
2. Steve Hershman, PhD, MS, MSE, is a graduate of the Systems Biology PhD program at Harvard University. His thesis, “Personal Genomics and Mitochondrial Disease”, describes efforts to identify causal genetic lesions in patients with mitochondrial disease and the development of web-based tools to explore genetic data. His research has been published in the journals Science Translational Medicine, Cell Metabolism and Nucleic Acids Research.
