South Africa: Boy, 4, Dies From Circumcision at ‘Slaughterhouse’

'A four-year-old boy in South Africa has died after being circumcised in a medical centre his father has described as a "slaughterhouse".

Gugulethu Mokalapa was taken off life support a week after the procedure. He was declared brain dead by two surgeons in a hospital in Germiston, east of Johannesburg.

The boy's father Reggie Mokalapa, 39, was told by doctors at the Medicross Germiston that the circumcision would take less than two hours, reports South Africa's Independent Online.

Five days after the circumcision, tests showed Gugulethu's brain was not responding and he was declared brain dead the following day. A second doctor confirmed his condition a week after the procedure.

The family then decided to take him off life support. Mokalapa said: "We are always advised to circumcise our children young, and we did this so that he'd be okay in future. Unfortunately, we took him to a slaughterhouse.'

I don't care that as an adult he chose to be circumcised, but he goes on and on about how it should be a personal choice, but then advocates for infant circumcision. He also has many statements about circed dicks looking better and circed men receiving more oral sex.

Hi, this is Robin Kirkman, the owner of Choosing Circumcision.

At least one other person has raised objects to the statements made on the website regarding RIC, and I have removed them. It has never been my intention to tell parents what to do when they have a son; the site is a resource for men who are interested in making that choice for themselves as adults.

You may wish to read this post on facebook [UPDATE: It seems that the original author has deleted the post, so this link is broken now], where I respond to another "anti-circ" activist with similar concerns, clarify my intent, and ultimately remove the RIC references which had no bearing on (and possibly detracted from) my resource for adult men making a free choice.

Hi Robin,

I see you have removed much of your support for infant circumcision from your website. Your website does not look as supportive of as it did when I originally came across it. It looks like you have changed or removed other stuff as well. If I recall correctly, before the content was removed you had more wording about how women prefer circed, it looks better, getting circed to please women, no man will regret the decision, and you went on about the "benefits". I think you also mentioned circing baby boys as you know they would not choose it for themselves when they become adults - which seemed like a bazaar statement to me.

Although I do not share your support for adult male circumcision for the sake of pleasing the opposite gender, I wont spend much time opposing it. I think men would be healthier if they refrained from surgery for the sake of pleasing the opposite gender, and this site (MANN) is about the health and rights of men and boys so your position of adult male circumcision for cosmetic reasons will not likely be very popular here.

Since your site is now only about adult male circumcision, I don't have too much more to say about it.
