New law firm helps dads navigate divorce, custody issues

'In recent years, family court proceedings like divorces and custody disputes have grown increasingly complicated and nuanced, as gender roles shift at work and at home.

Cordell & Cordell, a national firm that expanded to Birmingham in May, focuses primarily on helping men navigate cases in family court.

The firm's attorneys provide information and counsel men as they deal with divorce and child custody issues because men have been at a disadvantage when it comes to domestic litigation, according to a news release.

Joseph Cordell, who founded the firm with his wife Yvonne, said there has been progress for men in family court, but "it's far from a level playing field."

Often, men are perceived in a certain light by judges, social workers and others involved in making decisions about a family, he said.

"The stakes are the highest that they'll ever be for these people," Cordell said. "Everything in this world that's of most importance to these two parties is on the table in this contest."

Certain tactics are used and allegations made - such as domestic abuse - that men must overcome, Cordell said.'
