'YOUNG women have extended their dominance over men at British universities as a result of the trebling of tuition fees, new figures show.

Higher fees depressed demand for higher education, with 51,000 fewer students starting a university degree this autumn compared with a year ago, a decline of 13 per cent.

But the fall was bigger among boys in their late teens than among girls, extending the gender gap on British campuses to a record amount.

Applications to university among boys aged 18 dropped by 1 point, with 30 per cent seeking a place in higher education. Among girls of the same age it slipped by only 0.6 of a point to 40.1 per cent, a gap of 10.1 percentage points.'
