'Military can take a toll on women's health'
Article here. Excerpt:
'The 18th Annual "A Woman's Journey" health symposium at the Baltimore Hilton highlighted lung disease and the health of women in the military.
Herrera was first deployed in 2004 to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Her son was 31/2 and her daughter 2. She was deployed again a year later to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center near El Paso, Texas.
Women in the military often suffer from back and joint problems from carrying heavy equipment and wearing ill-fitting uniforms that sometimes cut into a woman's breast area, Herrera said. Extreme weather conditions can lead to skin disorders. And hearing problems can arise from gunshots, bombings and loud military equipment.
"I was never able to get used to the hum of the generator," Herrera said. "It was noisy all the time."
Mental stress is also an issue as women worry about their safety at war and their families back home. The mental stress is something that can linger even after a soldier returns home. Herrera and her husband eventually divorced because of the stress of her military career.'

Hum.of.the.generator
Good God. "Hum of the generator". Skin dryness problems. Hmm, is your skin a little dry from the desert heat? There, there, have some lotion. Gee, doc, I am so very sorry for you. I suppose it's easier to get used to the sound of people FUCKING SHOOTING AT YOU ALL NIGHT!!!!
Newsflash, doc: The military can take a toll on men's health, too. Yeah, back and joint problems. Yeah, "mental stress" (aka: POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER due to having watched YOUR BEST FUCKING FRIEND GET HIS FUCKING HEAD BLOWN OFF RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU while some guy who just got posted to your unit HAS A FUCKING NERVOUS BREAKDOWN AND STARTS CRYING FOR HIS MOTHER all in the space of, oh, 10 SECONDS! Meanwhile, you have to keep fighting on or else-- die yourself. And it's like that for the next THREE FUCKING DAYS!!!
So yeah, doc, life in the military can be stressful for men, too.
Sorry the generator kept you up nights. That must have been terribly stressful for you, poor dear.
I am dumbfounded
All I can say is that I'm sickened, truly sickened by the gender biasness in this article. I am truly lost for words.
Show some compassion!
Any woman in the military who sleeps near a generator deserves the Purple Heart. I imagine the sound of injured men returning to the base also has a detrimental impact their sleep.
Have any of you ever experienced the horror of dry skin and the painstaking process of applying Lubriderm?
As for those uncomfortable uniforms, I'm a bit disappointed the military hasn't provided silk clothing for these ladies.
"Still, Herrera said, she
"Still, Herrera said, she began to feel a kinship with the other soldiers and a strong desire to serve her country and do more with her military career. As a doctor, she became concerned about the health issues women face while deployed."
Clearly she didn't feel a kinship with the other soldiers or she wouldn't have utterly dismissed them like she's done.
